According to Flashlights Unlimited the Solitaire 1AAA bulb has never been updated, and gas fill is listed as N/A.

Could it be Krypton but undisclosed? Because the Mini Mag 2AA was Krypton and later upgraded to Xenon.

I wonder if there's an easy method of verifying the gas fill.

Some of them have color codes.
Was thinking scientifically, as Xenon boils at around 47 °F and Krypton boils at 34 °F under 1000 psi.

Not sure about the bulb though.

But there are 2 different versions.
The older 2 stripe ones in the larger cards.
And the newer ones in the smaller card with just a white base.

Curiosity got the better of me and I bought a new silver incan solitaire. I knew what to expect and it's definitely not bright, but moonlight mode has its uses.

I cut a piece of dc fix which actually snapped in under the lip on the outside of the lens. Nice and easy. A little less throw but very clean beam compared to what it was. Essentially the same brightness and beam profile that comes out of my prometheus beta on moonlight, but with that more lively incan glow. Should have good performance on nimh.

Sry for late reply, but I don't think that's accurate. Original bulb was krypton, and imo is the nicer of the two variants, but I got the feeling they didn't last as long. The newer bulb is xenon, very cool temperature, and actually hurts my eyes, makes them water. I suppose it appears a little brighter, but at what cost. As of a few years ago it was still possible to find NOS krypton Solitaire bulbs, but I haven't looked in a while. But even then, most replacement bulbs were xenon.

Here are one, two, three, krypton replacement bulb auctions on eBay at outrageous prices.

And that beam shot is amazing, Megalamuffin.

Very nice! I did this with my minimag, makes for a beautiful incandescent beam.

I've owned many over the years and, honestly, just never cared for them. They never put out enough light, the light they did put out was wildly random in pattern, and the bulb was crazy expensive when I broke it. I might try an LED model, but there are many more out there that have my attention I doubt I'll ever get around to it.

Thing is, back then, what else was there in single AAA? I think probably for decades, Solitaire was the finest single AAA light in the galaxy. And with 10440 today and brighter lamps, there are possibilities.

Back when the solitaire was a new idea most places weren't lit up like today and many places got even darker after 11pm because the businesses turned off lights, homes did too. A burglar's dream come true.
The solitaire requires a twist, twist, twist and twist some more to get a beam that throws and dims fairly quickly due to the battery not holding out. It was probably worse in the 80's and 90's before the long life numbers available today.
So I can see why some said "no thanks" back then and opted for more volts. But I still use one at times to inspect inside of objects where only a little bit of light is too much. I don't use it for 2am nature calls anymore because frankly by the time I've dialed in the beam I've done what needed to be done and gone back to bed.

Before I bought Sofirn Sofia's, Solitaire was, and still is depending on hands reach, my go to.. Like others said, just enough Lumens for behind or underneath appliances, or looking for a lost dog ball under couch.

Edit: typos

What bulb are you using with a 10440?

That's a good question. They were produced by Lamptronix for use in avionics in Teen Series combat aircraft (Tomcat, Eagle, Hornet, etc.). I found some surplus on eBay wow 5 years ago, assuming incorrectly they were MiniMag replacement lamps. The MiniMag lamps will flash on Li-ion, but they work well with a single LiFePO4, and are brighter than the Lamptronix, which are yellow, and dim over time from carbon building up on the inside of the bulb. But they sure are durable, and while they're bright, the color temperature is very nice if you like incan.

Thing is the reflector and lens will melt. That's why I drilled a hole in my lens. But I have hope there's an Al OP reflector that might be able to work in a Soli head, and with some kind of modification, maybe tiny washers stacked and glued on the bottom, maybe it can activate the Soli switch. Glass lenses can be found, though usually massively convex in that size, with which I am fine. The difficulty is in making the lens work as, according to bykfixer (ty), the plastic lens is press fit, so after figuring out how to get the plastic lens out, technically the easy part though it isn't easy, there will be more difficulty in installing the glass lens.

I have also crammed a Mag-Num Star 3 cell bipin in a Solitaire, which will work with bent pins and widening the reflector hole, and removing the lens, but the plastic reflector is no longer doing anything other than activating the switch (so pure incan flood). What's left of the reflector will continue to melt with every use until the lamp is permanently stuck in the reflector, pins pull out of the socket, making it near impossible to seat the pins back in the socket (because the head screws on and off). But it was fun while it lasted.

Mrs Fixer told me her phone didn't charge one night. I switched to my cable that works perfect. Again, same thing.

Maglite incan solitaire shined into the charger port revealed pocket lint was the culprit.
