    Recommend a handheld light

A bit over your price range, but a Zebralight could work if you want to keep the light small (1 inch wide, 3.2 inch long). Their SC5 AA maxes out at over 500 lumens but also has a really low 0.1 lumen mode. Comes with a belt clip too (needs a good rechargeable or lithium AA to get max output...

My beloved EDC needs an upgrade

Sounds like another DQG TI might be the best choice. Not many lights that small unless you go for a custom light. Yeah, the higher CRI lights do have less output than the normal Cree LED lights. The better color rendering comes from a more even spectrum of light: It's a bit more than tint...

My beloved EDC needs an upgrade

I had similar one! (DQG Tiny in SS, instead of Ti, gave it a to a friend a year and a half back) As for light output, from what I've noticed, LEDs have gotten brighter but the bigger thing for me is that good color rendering LEDs are also more available (Nichia 219 being the big one). For Ti...

    X-Ray study of LED reliability

This was a area of reliability I haven't though about before, and thought would be nice to share. Glad to see that many of you have more in depth information and experience with this! Sure was, Osram has also done a study as well, and I'm sure many other companies as well...

which LED type is best for bulb production

What defines quality for you? Good CRI? High reliability? Tint? Any size restrictions? :welcome:

    Heat Management

All the heatsinking isn't going to help if there are voids in the LED or in the LED solder connections. Came a cross a study on LED stability today talking about voids and seem relevant here. Here's a study by Cree...

    X-Ray study of LED reliability

Came across this video about LED failures from Creative Electron: https://youtu.be/UoxexFBmr0E?t=3m48s Didn't know about solder voids, now I know that solder can sometimes look like a sponge. So, if your build isn't getting as bright as you expect, or is dying early, blame the voids!

    my edc needs/wants

Are you looking for a light that can use multiple different battery sizes? (AA, AAA, C, CR123, etc.) or just different battery chemistry (Alkaline, Lithium, rechargeable)? What size (Keychain, clip carry, Holster)? What type of use? (Far reaching but narrow, close and wide, somewhere in...

Difference between orange peel and smooth reflectors?

What richbuff said. Orange peel is kinda like a diffuser, except on the reflector.

World's first real Free Energy Flashlight - no shaking - no batteries! No Solar.

Erm... hate to burst your bubble, but you need a changing magnetic field to create current. Plus, a metal body will block the electromagnetic waves from reaching the antenna (which is used to pull energy). What he said! [FONT=Verdana]

    Modding my girlfriend's Maglites! Suggestions?

Re: Modding my girlfriend's 2d Maglite! Suggestions? Nice! She might slowly get sucked into this hobby as well. Malkoff drop-ins are single mode, I don't recall seeing a runtime chart so I don't know what the runtime chart looks like.

    Modding my girlfriend's Maglites! Suggestions?

Re: Modding my girlfriend's 2d Maglite! Suggestions? Are Malkoff drop-ins still top of the line for maglite drop-ins? Also, are you looking to upgrade the output or more the usability (or both)? I'm assuming she has an incan Maglite?

Has anyone retrofitted a baby stroller?

Well, someone has made this for a walker: http://hackaday.com/2015/08/20/hackaday-prize-entry-lighting-the-way-for-walkers/ If you are looking to be visible, maybe some bicycle visibility lights could work.

Which 4x18650 has the most powerful throw beam?

Something with an HID bulb might be good as well, though they do have warm up time and require more care to use than LEDs. I'm not sure what the latest 4 18650 HID light is though. I know the Magic Scorpion 65w or the Firefoxes F3 were both nice a few years back.
