making normal LED waterproof by "potting" in polyurethane resin?

Ah i thought you meant something like this: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?237323-Modified-MTE-SSC-P7-900-Lumen-2-Mode This method is now obsolete as you can buy a ready-made one for about the same price.... the same guy does something similar to what i think you are...

making normal LED waterproof by "potting" in polyurethane resin?

I'd say its possible.... But it is also a way of ruining a perfectly good flashlight.... These days, there are a raft of cheap dive lights available - probably cheaper than buying a pot of glue ;-) cheers,

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

Upadate! (sort of) due to the performance/price equation i bought another one of these lights to make a video light for a small underwater HD camera. i went with an ebay deal that came with a torch body, charger and 2 26650 batteries. After a few uses, both the new torch and the old one...

thinking of upgrading to u3 - opinions sought!

Folks - i have a couple of dive lights that might benefit from some newer technology.... One is a magicshine with an SSC-P7 driven by 2x 18650 in series , and the others are a cree T6 and U2 respectively ,driven by a single 18650. I was thinking of getting me 3 Cree u3's and swaping them in...

Help Needed! Possible to convert Trustfire 8500 LED to a Dive Light?

.....you could try something like this: http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?237323-Modified-MTE-SSC-P7-900-Lumen-2-Mode .... But unless you already have the trustfire, and are willing to risk trashing it - (having modded and flooded a few lights over the years i speak from...

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

No worries - you should find a way to measure the voltage while the battery is under load - i.e. when the light is shining - the batteries will have a different voltage with no load. cheers,

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

My AUD$0.02... The LED's themselves need "around" 3.6 volts to fire up properly - some more, some less depending on manufacturing tolerances... the batteries start out at around 4 volts and drop to 3.6 before the protection circuit cuts in... this does not leave much for the driver to work...

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

You can - but both solutions will waste power.... you could also replace the existing driver with one that can handle 12v.....BUT this particular light has a driver integral to the housing, and also has an internal set of reed switches so that it can be switched on and off via a magnet hidden...

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

i don't care much for "woulds" and "Probablies"..... I own one of these units and have used it underwater ....for the type of diving i do - nowhere near caves or wrecks, or anywhere else that actually needs a full burn for 3 hours - i don't notice the difference..... for the odd night dive...

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

That was what i was going to do as well.....only i was going to make a 3.7v battery pack.....i'm tipping that 11.8v will result in smoke.....having killed a similar cheap light attempting the same thing......and killed that one with a mere 7.4 volts..... i was going to use 9 x 2500mAh AA nimh...

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

Having just bought one of these with the intention of making a canister light.....i can confirm they would be a good starting point... brighter than a 10W HID..... Although......seeing as the burn time is around 2-3 hrs with a 26650....and they are a tiny little unit.... i am no longer going to...
