mule flashlights - how would you use it?

+1, even if you are a camera! I set up a rig for scanning books (with a camera ) for digitizing, and had trouble lighting the pages evenly. Eventually I got the idea to unscrew the head of one of my lights, thereby removing the reflector. That bare emitter was perfect for lighting the pages up...

I needed my flashlight in Starbucks during the day!

My light goes out on me in the bathroom all the time because it's faulty :( there's a 'trick' to turning it on which becomes second nature after a while, but it does sometimes flicker off when I'm on the can. Luckily, the switch is easy to reach while seated, so it's not too much of a problem...

Lessons from Sandy Storm power outages

I had exactly that plan in mind, great minds think alike :D Another thing that I am going to do is build a lantern that is a low output battery vampire. I'm going to make it with a D battery box, and I'm going to get adapters for every cell size so that they can be nested like russian dolls. My...

I needed my flashlight in Starbucks during the day!

I used to use my light the whole time in a similar situation. I only had a 2xAAA m@g at the time because it was before I became a flashaholic, but it sure was useful in candle mode. The problem wasn't time switches, it was that all of the pubs and even the Pizza Hut in the city center where I...

Anyone ditching quality lights and modding budget lights from ground up?

I agree, and that's why you have to do anlot of research before selecting a host. In fact, when you know you'll be replacing all of the electronic parts, the quality of the metalwork is pretty much the only criteria that you need to look at. There is NOTHING wrong with the threads and anodizing...

Flashlight to the rescue! Noisy people lining up for gas...

Thankfully the station has run out of gas and people are going elsewhere now. Having a big long line of cars full of irate drivers parked outside your house is not a pleasant thing :(

Flashlight to the rescue! Noisy people lining up for gas...

That did occur to me, but I wasn't too worrried about it. There was a cop car patroling the line, and there were just too many people around for someone to get away with it. We live in an upstairs apartment, so they would have had to get through two locked doors and six rounds of 00 buckshot...

Flashlight to the rescue! Noisy people lining up for gas...

I live in NY, and as most of you are probably aware, there is a gas shortage. People have been lined up outside my house, sitting in their cars since at least 6am waiting for the nearby gas station to get a delivery. The line stretches two blocks, and then makes a left turn with cars as far as I...

Anyone ditching quality lights and modding budget lights from ground up?

That's true to an extent. I think I paid about $23 for the T-803 but I did already have glow powder, epoxy, solder, tools etc. The S-A2 cost about $17, because I modified the existing driver rather than fit a new one, so it was just the cost of the flashlight and the emitter. Again, I already...

Anyone ditching quality lights and modding budget lights from ground up?

And patience, and skill (although I believe that the skills required can be learned by pretty much anyone who is determined to learn them) One point that I'd like to make is that I believe that the title of this thread is a little misleading; 'budget' most definitely does not preclude...

Anyone ditching quality lights and modding budget lights from ground up?

I love building my own lights using budget lights as material. My favorite light is the body of a Trustfire T-803. The body is extremely well made, and has a large well-machined brass pill/heatsink. Into it I put a new driver, which has (I think) 16 modes, but all of the flashy stuff is hidden...

Wow, why in the world do you carry a flashlight with you?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner! That is the PERFECT answer, and I'm going to steal it next time I get asked :D

    Flashlight ruined by leaking batteries

Re: FREAKING ALKALINES!! Scratch two Maglites!! Yup, in the dark days before my flashaholism, I had a 2xAAA mini m@g. I kept it loaded with alkalines on top of my circuit breaker box in the hallway of my apartment. I guess I was thinking like a flashaholic even then, because I remember...

Is your spouse, partner etc a closet flashaholic?

Yes of course it is (this thread is very much intended as a light hearted tongue in cheek one). My wife is awesome and very tolerant of my bizarre hobbies, but the flashlight addiction is the only one she can really empathize with. I just wish she'd admit it :D

What's your absolute "must have" criteria for buying another flashlight?

Re: What's your absolute "must have" criteria for buying another flashlight? For me, it's all about UI and scope for emitter upgrades with a healthy dose of cell size. I am only really interested in EDC lights, and I like to mod. I am torn at the moment between the two classic EDC cell...

Is your spouse, partner etc a closet flashaholic?

My wife is constantly critical of my hobbies. Not in an active way, but in a passive way. She doesn't share my enthusiasm for, say, Star Trek prop replicas (few people do...) and I totally get that. There are not many people who would understand the months of work I put into making an exact...

Not a lot of Streamlight love? Why?

This was actually the reason I got into flashlights in the first place. A couple of female friends and relatives carried kubotans, but being here in NY, kubotans can get you into trouble because they are a weapon. The ladies concerned used to have their kubotans on their keychains, so they...

    O-Ring Availability Question

No idea, but my local Ace doesn't carry one single metric drill bit. I ended up having to order one online.
