Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

After messing around with the light meter, I'm not sure how much the extra 0.4A is going to get me anyway... With the 3D cells and the light running at 3.1A I'm getting 46 kCd. I don't think it will do much better at 3.5A. Maybe it's best to just leave it alone :) My factory 2D rebel Mag is...

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

The only place I have space for a 5W ceramic resistor, sadly, is in the tailcap (under the spring).

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

3.6V is not enough, 4.8V is too much. 3 cells makes the light run at about 3.1A. 4 Cells will let it run regulated but it overheats the driver. I need a small amount of resistance to drop it like 0.6V or 0.8V for the light to run in regulation with 4 cells. That's why I'm doing this. With 4...

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

Thanks Justin. What holds the spring in the tailcap? Just friction? No solder joint needed to keep the bottom portion of the spring connected, just a friction fit with the anodizing removed?

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

Ahh, I see what you are saying, almost like a thin-resistive-spacer. That's a good idea and I can still hide the resistor inside the spring area. I like it! Now we're getting somewhere!! Even if i solder one leg of the resitor to the base of the spring, it will transfer it's heat into the...

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

I was really hoping for suggestions from someone that's installed a resistor in a Mag tailcap before. Maybe it's been done, maybe it hasn't, I was hoping someone else had done it before and could offer advice. Perhaps soldering isn't the best way and someone has done it another way. As far as...

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

I have a 1D sized spacer. When I use 3 cells, the light wont reach 3.5A with only 3 cells and it doesn't run regulated. I'm saying I need to add the 4th cell for the light to regulate correctly and have something burn off the excess voltage (besides the driver) to keep it in regulation.

Help needed: Adding resistance to a mag tailcap

About 4 months ago, I took my parents 15 year old Maglite (pre-D serial) 4 Cell D and updated it. I had someone make me a custom heatsync and a custom driver. I installed a chopped rebel reflector and put an XM-L T6 in it. The problem with the light is, with 4 freshly charged cells NiMh...

    Those with rebel mag reflectors....

Ah thanks, I'll pick up a set tonight from Harbor. Since I'll be drilling through plastic, I'll take the $12 set LoL.

    Those with rebel mag reflectors....

So you cut the whole cam off then? Can anyoone link me to a step bit so I can order the same type you're using. Can somoene let me know which way you drill? From the top (where the light is emitted from) down, or do you drill in from the side where the came used to be ?

    Those with rebel mag reflectors....

How much of the cam do you cut off first and what do you use to cut the cam? After you cut the cam, which way do you drill with the step bit (do you drill in on the tailcap side or do you drill down through the top of the reflector)?

    Those with rebel mag reflectors....

Wow, last time i tried to get rebel reflectors from Maglite, they told me only the incan ones were available . Good to know they're selling them now!

    Those with rebel mag reflectors....

Where did you get rebel reflectors from? I've been looking around and can't find them anywhere (other than in the lights that you can buy in the store).

A 3D Printer for the CPF community?

Non-conductive spacers for all sorts of uses... custom shims for people that need to adjust HID bulbs to get correct focus... custom switch parts... reflector shims for maglites to keep things centered and aligned in mag heads... Geeze, now I want a 3D printer!

A 3D Printer for the CPF community?

This seems like a hugely awesome idea. People would be able to have pretty much anything they could imagine made for $25. You might want to consider using the printer to make up "kits" for sale. Something like DIY battery holders where you sell the the plastic wafer ends that hold the...

How to blast away any aspheric torch

I see Nos was last active 09-11-2011. Nos, did you ever do anything with this or take any outdoor beamshots? If this die image is only an inch at 30 feet as you suggested above, I'm extremely interested in doing a project like this. I'm the distance between the optic and the LED can be...

LED or drop-in recommendation needed for Aspheric Maglite Mod

I was really enjoying the aspheric XM-L T6 mod but something didn't seem right with it... It would run for a full hour and be very cool to the touch. The first battery setup I was using was a single 18650 with PVC spacers and a dummy AA. I noticed that it would only supply about 2 amps at...

LED or drop-in recommendation needed for Aspheric Maglite Mod

Well I finally got around to doing the aspheric mod that I've been planning for almost 4 months now. I got two H22A heatsyncs from Setapong. The first LED i tried was the XR-E R2. I was very dissappointed with it, even when i ran it at 2 amps. It wasn't very impressive at all past 50 feet...
