LED headlights in 2009 Honda Insight Hybrid?

Looks like Honda will be using multiple slug LEDs for headlights in their 2009 Insight. They call the car the "prius killer." Wonder if they are using Cree, Luxeon, or something else?? off http://automobiles.honda.com/insight-hybrid/exterior-photos.aspx illuminated...

CREE XR-E heatsinked on regular copper pc board?

Has anyone tried to heatsink a XR-E on plain old copper printed circuit board? That stuff is a lot easier to find and solder to. It seems that Cree has gotten the heat down, maybe heavy aluminum heatsinking or thick copper plate isn't needed... ?

    Direct drive 5mm ?

I read some threads about a 5mm mod for a 2xAA minimag using an "mjled". It looks like a regular white 5mm led, with no drop resistor. Just the 5mm jammed into the minimag's wheat incandescent bulb socket. So is it safe then to DD 5mm LEDs? I'm preparing for some night hikes, and will either...

    LM27xx, LM50xx switching/PWM DC-DC converters

Anyone try out these driver chips? They come in boost or buck (e.g. LM2736). The Zetex chip has been analyzed and length on CPF. The main difference, it seems, is these chips have the FET onboard. Doesn't sound like much of a savings, but it is still one less component, 3 less solder joints...

Building a driver circuit with Zetex, etc

Other sites on the net refer to a thread about using a Zetex chip to build a driver around. I've searched for Zetex, and can't find that thread. I did find a thread http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=70286&highlight=zetex that refers to it, but the link to that thread doesn't...

Is it true that regulation is not need for nimh?

I've been think of getting a couple of cheap non-regulated Luxeon flashlights. On newsgroups, some people have said that regulation is more for disposable alkaline batteries, but NiMH has stable output that won't benefit from driver electronics. Also, I've read that NiMH has lower voltage, but...
