    Direct Drive P7 M@g Experience

Knowing that I'm "knowledgeable" in flashlights, a colleague has asked me to help him choose one for his night time excursions while fishing. I'm trying to steer him towards a DD 2D or 3D M@g. Cost is a consideration, but so is robustness and run time. A driver circuit only adds one more...

Hmmm, I think I'll try to get a CC regulator then. Oh and I remember everything about the resistor mod! Thanks a bunch, Cheers! Sami

Thanks for clearing that up. I was in the process of making a P7 2D Mag. I wanted to run the P7 a bit harder than last time as I'll be using it myself. Two ways of doing this are by using either one of Taskled's hipCC driver boards, or one of Der Wichtel's buck convertors. In as far as I can...

Alan Just a question, how do you measure the current across the P7 LED? I read on another thread that there is a voltage drop caused by the ammeter which will underestimate the current flow. Is this true? How did you correct for this underestimation?

    Direct Drive P7 M@g Experience

The cells that I have seem to be fresh. They're made in Belgium. Unfortunately, I've sent the 3D P7 off to my younger brother as a gift. I'll try to make another one soon, and then I'll run a test with different cells. I might do one like you. A 2D Mag with 3 C-cells. Then I'll share my experience.

Alan I'm just wondering how I was getting 2.2 amps on an I-bin with 3 D-size Duracell alkalines and not higher . Logically, a J-bin should draw less current, isn't it? Did you do any switch mods to reduce resistance?

Alan Any mods to the switch or the tail spring?

    Direct Drive P7 M@g Experience

Alan i think you've already gone through jtr1962's thread. i've posted it here anyway, since I've used it as reference to determine light outputs of various LEDs. Here's a post showing the output vs. current curve for a C-bin P7...

    Direct Drive P7 M@g Experience

So power lost in the resistor would be I²R or 2.8²x0.1=0.78 Watt. Or, in other words, the system is (2.8*3.25)/(0.78+(2.8*3.25)) = 92.1% efficient. Assuming a Vf = 3.25 and If = 2.8 A. Not bad at all IMHO :) Now I know what I'll be doing as a future project. Thing is, until now I was...

    Direct Drive P7 M@g Experience

The Li-ion was at about 4 volts when I did the test, so a fully charged one could be even higher in current (or maybe not - with the voltage sag) IIRC, the D2Flex is rated for a maximum of 3.4 amps. http://taskled.com/compare.html I don't think I'd be able to use that with a fully charged...

    Direct Drive P7 M@g Experience

I've tried a Trustfire 18650 Li-ion on a 3D Direct Drive (on D-alkaline) P7 Mag. The LED is a DSWOI P7 I got from Photonfanatic. I connected the battery directly to the LED. Positive terminal on one leg of the LED and a connection from the Negative terminal via an Ammeter. I got 3.4 amps for a...
