    4-AA Holder from RadioShack - DOES - fit D-Mag !

Re: 4-AA Holder from RadioShack MIGHT fit D-Mag ? I can't remember who it was, but someone took an 8aa cell holder and cut out the spaces between the batteries such that they touched each other and managed to get it to fit. It also depends on your mag though. I can't even fit 4 aa's into the...

New - Duracell Prismatic 'flat-AA' Batteries

Re: New - Duracell Prismatic \'flat-AA\' Batteries Someone needs to make a square flashlight. Maybe out of a piece of square tubing? You could stack a bunch of these things in there.

How do I measure the output of a "wall wart"?

Re: How do I measure the output of a measure the voltage drop across a known resistance. Then calculate the current (i=v/r) and the wattage (i*v)

Thermally Controlled NiMh Fast Charger Works Great

Question, do you find that you can get a complete charge meerly comparing temperature to ambient? I thought it was the time rate of change in the temperature of the batteries that determined when the charge was done?

    Rechargeable Alkaline Question

I must only go through 2-3 sets of alkys a year in my TI. And I use it regularly every day. You guys must really push those things hard to use up so many batteries. I personally have had too many bad experiences with leaking rechargable alkys to ever trust them again. Just my experiences though.

Are NiMh batteries subject to memory effect?

Generally they do not exhibit memory effects. However, they are rather intolerant of being overcharged. This is one of the reasons why NiCD's are still used often is because they are more tolerant of being overcharged.

How bad is mixing battery brands together ??

I wouldn't worry about explosions as much as I would worry about the batterys leaking. If you use batteries with different levels of charge and one gets discharged before the others, it can reverse the cell and it can leak all over the inside of your light. I lost a mag that way. I left it...

    Battery spares; how stored?

If loose batteries accidently get shorted against something metal, best case they end up dead. Worst case they end up melted or on fire. Generally you don;t want to cary loose batteries in your pocket with your keys or change. You can also buy battery pouches meant just for carying batteries...

    Solar voltage limiter?

Couldn't you use a zener doide reverse biased between the pos and neg etminals of your solar pannel to limit the voltage output to 5v? It would dissipate everything over 5V through the diode, so you'd need a decently heafty one.

Proposal of electronic & light output criteria.

If you have the equipment handy to be able to measure the intensity of the light, then you certainly should also have the ability to make time based plots of that intensity. I say just give a plot of intensity and voltage v time and let people draw their own conclusions. It is not right to...

    Wind powered battery charger?

The problem with wind power is it neads a constant moderate to heavy wind, which precludes using wind power near ground level for most of the country.

Yes, I have ANOTHER question about NiMh charging..

Re: Yes, I have ANOTHER question about NiMh chargi That's a simple take on it. You neglect the internal resistences of the batteries, which will vary with temperature, which will vary with charge. You can approximate a C/10 rate with the resistor method, but the only way to hold exactly a...

Should I store my batteries in the fridge?

keeping Alks in the fridge does help for very long term storage. For my ambulance work we buy the little disposable pen lights in a large bulk order then store them in the freezer. Years later they are as fresh as the day we bought them.

    New Magnesium Rechargable Battery

I think problems with crasing of electric cars will be more along the lines of worrying about high current DC electrical wiring. If a firefighter accidently cut through a cable coming from a large battery pack - byebye jaws of life. The end would either be vaporized or perminently welded to...
