    Inexperienced Stupid Knife Question

I imagine that you can understand how a light can a sort of extension of one's personality and how one derives a bit of satisfaction from the use of same. Knives are sort of the same. Think of it this way: cheap knife vs. good knife is the same as stock Mag Light vs. Mag Light w/ Malkoff...

    Some damascus and mammoth tooth.

    T. Rex, I took the time to log in just so I could post that I REALLY like this knife. The use of mammoth tooth (very old) and CF (space age stuff) is very cool. Fitting all that clearly took a lot of time and must have been tedious. Add to that you used my favorite blade shape/configuration (I...

    1st CPF knife

George, Please comment on how the prototype feels in the hand. Balance-wise how does it feel? Does your hand tend to "sink in" to the grip? Thumb ramp placement feels good? In terms of steel. I understand this is still up for debate. Because you work 440C mostly, are more confident in your...

Interest list for custom CPF fixed blade knife

Did we ever nail down the steel? 440C? Will the scales be permanently attached? These two details make a difference - to me. Apologies if I overlooked this posted somewhere else. I REALLY want this knife, but I have some other obligations and I feel a bit guilty thinking about dropping the $$...

    1st CPF knife

Perhaps the maker would offer the option of a bare blade i.e., no scales on the handle allowing the end user to either do a cord wrap or add scales of their own choosing. I have a few Becker Neckers that I added scales of Black Locust to which turned out very nice. And perhaps this might shave...

    Help me design a knife

The have been some very good points put forth so far, also some that to *me* seem pretty far off the mark. I'll let ya'll figure out which is which. :D Methinks it's going to be awful difficult to design a knife by committee. The design elements that I prize, others may despise - knives are...

    Help me design a knife

Gh66, Yeah, I can dig it. I wonder though if we could keep the cost down by knocking the "frills" off of that design. Basically, meld the handle and blade shapes together and eliminating the holes and extended choils/guard. Perhaps even eliminate the recurve as that, I believe, adds a bit of...

    Help me design a knife

Mr. Tichbourne, Perhaps scale down your "Companion" design, ditch the clip point in favor of a drop point, smooth out the finger grooves, and apply some more utilitarian (lower costs :D) scales. That might be a good jumping off place for the CPF blade. Just a suggestion. I like that blade a lot.

    Help me design a knife

RE: the light. While I suppose this was a joke, I did think about having some tritium inset in the end of the scales/handle. That would be pretty unique and add come functionality too. Perhaps greenLED might have some ideas on lanyards....??? ;)

    Help me design a knife

Well, I'll throw in my .02. Should be something small and light - something that would be viable for EDC - NOT a sharpened pry bar. Maybe 3" blade and ~3" handle of micarta. The Becker Necker was/is a very popular knife. While I have a few, they never really did it for me. But something in...

    Sharpness testing...

Hi bushguy, welcome. Your question is a good one. It's also one of those, "Ask 10 people, and you'll get 10 different answers..." kind of questions. I've gone round and round on how to sharpen and how sharp is sharp enough. I expect that your method using the file and finished with stropping...

Cleaning an old knife ... Now with photo !

Flitz and the finest steel wool (or brass wool found at Brownells) that you can find. Flitz will also work with a paper towel/rag. It will remove the rust without removing the patina. Protect it with wax as has been suggested or a grease called XF-7. XF-7 was developed by knifemaker Kevin...

    Knife Sharpeners (Part 2)

Re: Knife Sharpeners The Gatco stones are wider than the Lansky's and thus it takes less time to sharpen a blade. I have a Lansky, but no longer use it. It is a bit dangerous. If you let you fingers fall down alongside the stone, you will be seriously cut. This is easy to do if you get...

    Spyderco Manix?

It's my EDC. Good ergos, good steel, great lock-up, and you can position the clip where you want it. What's not to like? It is large, but I got used to the size quickly. Now most other pocket knives look and feel.... dinky. The blade shape is very useful as well. Score one, you won;t regret it.
