    DVD Laser- IR and Protection?

Since your working with a dvd laser you can get by with just a simple pair of welding goggles. You can pick those up at any hardware store. You don't need heavy shading so anything designed for light welding should be fine. As a bonus, since welding also produces harmful IR and UV, welding...

    Dealextreme 30mw

Very simple answer, It's bright, shiny, and few people have them. My reason. I wanted something that could really point out stars at night, even with ground level light pollution (Street lights). I've tried a 5mw Jasper but returned it because it was more than I wanted to spend and while it...

    Dealextreme 30mw

Asking the usual questions. Tried fresh batteries? Checked the battery tube for any metal filings that could be draining the batteries? (behind the foam donut too) I can barely see mine in the house, but I'm fairly certain it works.

    Dealextreme 30mw

Okay, those are valid opinions. But please do not frame them as absolute facts about DX without proof. Balloon popping is a relative thing, depending on numerous factors. (Material, temp, thickness, pressure, chemical makeup, beam size, ect.) Until you measure one, there is no proof in your...

    Temperature and laser??

LD = specialized LED An LD is just an LED with intergrated lasing cavity. LD's can be pushed past maximum CW current, that's why they give you specs for Pulsed and CW current operation in Datasheets. The laser (simplistically speaking) is two parallel mirrors at some wavelength apart so...

    Temperature and laser??

I'll disagree with that. (Current does increase in a PN junction as temp increases.) If I put a led on a potentiometer, It will get brighter as the resistance is lowered and the current increases. (Until it goes *poof*) Same thing happens if I keep resistance and voltage the same but change...

    Temperature and laser??

Diodes perform better with temperature. Look at thermal runaway, a diode is more than happy to burn itself to death, if you let it. The warmer the PN junction the more current will pass, more current more heat ect. ect... Look at precision diode instruments they are all temperature controlled...

    DX Green Lasers questions...

I think Corona is being overly cautious (As you should be with any laser). But, I've seen other threads that have stated the DX lasers have very little IR leakage. Personally, I'm more worried about the potential damage done by the 30-50mw of green light. I also think DX tends to take a CYA...

    Free Laminated Laser Warning Signs

Let me know if they send you one. (Or if they weed out fictitious requests) I'd like to get one for my shark mounted lasers. :naughty: (Guppies with glowsticks, just doesn't instill fear.)

    "Despeckling" Green pointer/cleaning...

You probably were using too much force and twisted the optics out of focus. (Hopefully) If you look down the barrel (Take out the batteries first!!) You'll see the brass fitting with two notches on either side. Get a jewelers screwdriver and carefully, with out scratching the lens. Turn those...

Making a DVD Burner into High Powered Laser?

I just got my new issue of MAKE: Vol 10 and they have a write up on page 140 for making a DVD laser. http://www.makezine.com/ If you can't find a copy, the same information can be found here: http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/11/how_to_make_a_d_3.html...

    Quick, easy question

If you are trying to see a beam broken you might want to try a Photodiode on the opposite wall connected to an alarm or meter. If you want more coverage area you might try a line generator laser. You can find those at any home improvement store. They are called laser levels. You might also...

    Quick, easy question

It's not illegal, the information has been published by numerous authors like Gordon McComb and Robert E. Iannini. Heck, you can buy one from here. The hard part is the alignment. I've done something similar with scouts using sunlight reflected off a window and a solar cell attached to a...

    Deal Extreme's Green Lasers

Not at all, the 200mw is pushing the design to the limits (perhaps a bit over) and the 5mw is underwhelming. The 30mw hits that magic sweet spot. Good performance at a great price.

    Dealextreme 30mw

I got my DX this week and I am very pleased with it. Pops balloons at 36" easily with included batteries. However, has anyone looked at current draw on these? On a fresh set of batteries 3.2V it's drawing 370mA. Does this sound right? Seems excessive for AAA batteries. But, since it's an...

    Cheap burning Blu-Rays soon.

I don't think us mere mortals will be able to get our hands on one of these bare diodes directly. (At least not without signing a NDA or being part of the Blu-Ray Alliance group) Then again you never know, they might be willing to sell the sub-prime units to the open market. But what is good...

    Amperage and voltage... what's dangerous?

I would hardly call Tesla Coils and Van deGraaff generators toys. Tesla coils can give you a nasty RF burn. And those are like lasers where the damage can occur before you even feel it. They ask you a bunch of questions about RF safety if you ever get a Ham License. The Skin Effect and...
