Upgrade your Aleph1 with seoul P4!

Just wanted to post my results with a Wiz2/1000 driving a Seoul USWOH P4. First time I built this light engine, I did not raise the P4. The Aleph 3 gave a big donut hole beam, and the Aleph 1 gave a very unfocused hotspot. Neither were satisfactory. I rebuilt the light engine using the copper...

Upgrade your Aleph1 with seoul P4!

The Vf of his Seoul is too high for the Downboy to run in regulation at 917 mA with just one Li-on cell. It would do fine with two CR123 or Li-ion cells.

    Downboy problem

If the Downboy was not well potted and provided a path for thermal relief, it may have overheated and died. I think this is a known problem for Downboys run in the 1 amp range. The currently available Downboys might have been revised to deal with this problem, but I don't know if the new ones...

Upgrade your Aleph1 with seoul P4!

Very nice. A bit hard to believe, but impressive if true!

A year ago, who would have thought...?

Bernie - just try to stay with moddable lights. Alephs, HDSs, and many others are fairly easily upgradeable as better LEDs come along. Having said that, I too have reached a point where I don't feel inclined to buy many lights. I'm pretty happy with my present family, and the possibilities of...

Wich converter to run on 1xCR123 or 1xRCR123

I have a NG750 which I run on Li-ion all the time. It has a UWOJ Luxeon and does just fine in an Aleph2. Even your TXOH would probably be fine with a Li-ion cell, but prolonged runtimes might be stressing it because of the current it would draw. Still, a T bin Lux is pretty cheap these days. IF...

Wich converter to run on 1xCR123 or 1xRCR123

Yes, minus the slight resistance of the convertor circuit It might with a low Vf lux, like a TXOH The Wiz2 will shut down at 2.5 volts, well before a CR123 is fully discharged. This is to protect Li-ion cells.

Wich converter to run on 1xCR123 or 1xRCR123

A Nexgen 750 or 1000 will be fine with a Li-ion cell. The 750 will initially run out of regulation and in direct drive, sending somewhat more than 750 mA to a J bin Luxeon, but as the cell voltage drops it will continue to deliver 750 mA to the LED. I think the Nexgen is a better choice for...

    Alumina Oxide powder

I think the guy was making a little joke. And alumina isn't a good incendiary, its already oxidized (aluminum oxide). In fact it has use as a fire retardant. Powdered aluminum is a different story:poof:

Could I replace my ux1j on my aleph1...

I'm thinking like easilyled. Lumileds won't just drop out in this technology race, and i would expect that the Luxeon line will see equivalent gains in efficiency at some point along the line so we can easily upgrade our current Alephs. How long that will take is a good question, though. It...

Does the Downboy need to be potted

A Downboy 1000 will eventually self-destruct if run in non-moving free air. You need to pot it for longevity. Thickening your favorite epoxy with alumina powder (available from the Sandwich Shoppe) will be an effective and cheap potting compound. I think a more robust Downboy is in the works...

Building an Aleph UV light engine?

The best UV LED will depend on the wavelength required by the adhesive to cure. The Cree part is just into the UV at 395 nm or so.

Aleph Light Engine Build **UPDATE WITH PROBLEM!!** 9/2/07

Re: Aleph Light Engine Build The circle of printed circuit around the outside diameter of the bottom of the Nexgen board is ground. For a really clean build, you can just solder this to the ecan - though it is hard to get the can hot enough to melt solder. But if you just want to wire it...

Aleph Light Engine Build **UPDATE WITH PROBLEM!!** 9/2/07

Re: Aleph Light Engine Build A Downboy is a "buck" convertor. It converts a higher voltage (a cell or multiple cells) to a lower voltage (the Vf, or forward voltage of the LED at the desired drive current). Driving a Luxeon at 917 to 1000 mA will typically take close to 4 volts, and the...

Aleph Light Engine Build **UPDATE WITH PROBLEM!!** 9/2/07

Re: Aleph Light Engine Build Driving a Luxeon at 1000 mA form a single CR123 or RCR123 cell is problematic. Almost any solution will give you very short runtimes in full regulation. If you still want to do this despite very short runtimes, and you want to sometimes use CR123 lithium primaries...

New generation of E-series compatible heads?

Don, you are the most artful teaser on the forums. Of course, part of the pleasure of life is anticipation and I look forward to whatever creation you may have in mind for the Aleph's dying spasm!

    Aleph 19 At the Shoppe

The A19 with a Luxeon III like your UX1K will have a fairly wide main beam with only a bit of a hotspot. This will be surrounded by the usual dim spill light. This contrasts with the Aleph 2 which has a hotspot much smaller than the A19 main beam, a bit of a corona around the hotspot, and then...

    Aleph 19 At the Shoppe

The A19 gives a big floody beam with a Luxeon. Makes for a decent task light, but it isn't a thrower by any stretch.

    Aleph out of production

I'm boo-hooing too. I wanted "just one more" A2 head kit. I have plenty of light engines, bodies, and tailcaps/switches, but haven't been able to score another A2 head:awman: .
