    'Micro' Lathe Advice Please

I'll give another recommendation to the micro-mark machine. It has a few advantages over most of the other 7X machines, first off it's 2 inches longer, 7X14. It has a digital spindle speed readout, a redesigned tailstock to fit longer pieces, and all metal spindle drive gearing, among some...

    Best wire for modding?

Why spend the extra dough on teflon coated wire unless you're making a hotwire that will put out some extreme heat? If you're melting PVC coated wire in an LED light then you've got other problems to worry about.

    Turning with a Mill

I'm no expert at all, but I've always figured that using your mill as a lathe for a large quantity of small parts is a great way to go if you're set up for CNC. This way you can have many different tool bits clamped onto the bed.. and then you can automatically switch bits while machining...

Bead blasting : "how to" - PICS added post 24 -

Re: Bead blasting : looking for a "how to" That knife blade looks great. What do you use the wax paper for exactly? I don't quite understand... Do you just put the masking tape on the wax paper so you don't ruin the sticky side? and then cut out with scissors? ..And just something I thought...

    First experience with titanium

Nice, glad to know the mini-lathes can massage titanium with light cuts. Is carbide a must for tooling? or can you get away with HSS?

    Question on Mini Lathe/mill combo

Hi Nitroz. I just went through this whole mini-lathe choice not too long ago. The grizzly is one of the more expensive versions you can get, but apparently it's worth it if you ever need any customer support. I bought my lathe from another company that's supposed to be great with customer...

What you get in a Hakko soldering station

I don't have a hakko soldering iron, but I do have a 936 ceramic heater I bought and used in another project, and it's got about 15,000 hours on it now, with no problems at all.

    CR123A Flashlight model.

Got the switching all sorted a couple days ago, and so far been working on getting power draw as low as possible. Right now I've got it down to: 4.2V - 90uA (600mAh battery = 277 days) 3.6V - 60uA (600mAh battery = 416 days) 2.7V - 20uA (600mAh battery = 1250 days) So nominally (with a...

    CR123A Flashlight model.

Yeah, that's exactly how I'm doing it, with a momentary switch it will have 4 "modes" off, low, med, high, off low..... With a clicky I would only code it with 3 modes, no "off" ..just click the switch to turn it off. I've got a little setup here on the breadboard going with a micro...

    CR123A Flashlight model.

I can set the current to anything really, it's just a choice of resistors. Or for a custom application I could set it up to use a pot for infinite current adjustment. More info to come for sure. I can't say how low I can get the power draw until I have it all sorted and tested, but it appears...

    CR123A Flashlight model.

I received the sample chips for the driver, wow they're small! 3mmx3mm 10 pin DFN package. Soldering iron is out for this one.. Rigging up an SMT hotplate right now, been meaning to for a while, and now I have a good reason.. I've always etched my own boards, so I'll try to etch my own...

Sulfuric Acid source for Anodizing Aluminum?

Thanks JHanko, I'm pretty ecstatic myself, can't believe how well it's all worked.. As for the fumes.. You're performing electrolysis, and there are bubbles.. so there must be fumes, of what? I'm not too sure, some chemistry buff could probably figure that out. There's a kind of mist of acid...

Sulfuric Acid source for Anodizing Aluminum?

Thanks mahoney, I'll have to go on the hunt for some, on the meantime my small make-do dye tanks are working very well. More anodized eye candy... I love this stuff. I'm going to try doing some custom designs anodizing aswell, fades, splashes, and a couple other ideas of my own I'd like to try.

    thread on outside threading ...

Thanks, that makes sense about the thread cutting depth, I understand now.. the chart posted by Will is for his specific radiused carbide tools, the one I posted is for pointy tools. Any info about how I'm cutting internal threads? or did I not explain that very well? Maybe I'll take a little...

How do you deal with frustration?

I suppose it depends what mood I'm in, and what time of day it is.. (A) You go Zen and start over? (B) You say a lot of improper words? (C) You leave the part to be done another day? I'd say B fading into A is quite a common combination of events... often after a beer or something to eat, or...

    thread on outside threading ...

This thread has got me to thinking now about the way I do internal threads. I use these tools that I cut myself on the grinder: I made the internal tool to work with the lathe in reverse, threading away from the headstock, so I wouldn't have to worry about bottoming out in a blind hole. I...

    thread on outside threading ...

I think that threading table is wrong, it doesn't tell you to go deep enough. This one is much more in depth, in 2 ways :) http://www.walteranderson.us/hobbies/metalworking/microlathe/frog/threading.html 0.28" for a 24TPI thread for example, is wrong, the actual depth is 0.316", which means...

Sulfuric Acid source for Anodizing Aluminum?

So far I haven't paid attention to the amp/sqft rule.. I've just been running 12V through. Something I notice though, when you first hook up the power there's a huge surge of energy.. Last night it kept setting off the short circuit protection on the power supply when I was trying to do a small...

Sulfuric Acid source for Anodizing Aluminum?

Just tried some red. I left it in the dye for quite a while to make sure that it didn't come out pink. No worries of that.. it's quite dark, almost maroon. If I would have done this with the green it would have come out a very dark forest type green. I'm extremely satisfied with the results...
