Finished my first 3 XPG mag mod

The guy I built it for wants the max brightness to have at least 2 hours of use so I limited the max current for him to keep it easy. Me? I'd crank it up to 4.5A personally and drop it down a level if I needed the 2+ hours runtime. Jeff

Finished my first 3 XPG mag mod

WOW! Was this thing trouble from the beginning. I've done many upgrades of existing lights and have had others build stuff for me but this was the first time I built a mag mod from scratch. It wasn't until I wired the H6Flex with the fourth wire (SWB) that it started behaving correctly. I know...

    I'm an idiot

But at what cost? I doubt that a dedomed LED will survive very long. Perhaps I should do a dedomed XPG endurance test. Jeff

    I'm an idiot

That's funny! I feel better, now.

    I'm an idiot

It does seem to still be intact but I don't really have anything to put it in. I would have to pick a few more pieces off of it before firing it up. Jeff

    I'm an idiot

I was finished with my Mag mod when I noticed a little thermal grease got on one of the LEDs. That stuff is SO messy. So I wiped it off. Apparently, I wiped too hard and broke the dome off of the LED. Now I have to order another one. My friend was ready to come pick it up. Now he has to wait a...

3w star emitter with built in driver?

Looks like the old Luxeon III LED. I didn't see a name brand on it but it sits pretty high compared to The new Cree LEDs. Jeff

    TaskLED on vacation?

They aren't shipping orders until Nov 14th. Damn. I wanted an LFlex or H6Flex. Guess I have to twiddle my thumbs until then. Jeff

    Mag mod dilemma

Parallel instead of series. How could I not think of that. Problem solved! The H6Flex has the perfect UI that I was looking for. My 8AA holder is from the sandwich shoppe. I hope Enloops fit in the maglite. Thanks for solving my problem. The answer was so simple, I couldn't see it. Haha Your...

    Mag mod dilemma

My output voltage at 1000ma is 9.9V. With the MaxFlex, it would direct drive it with 8AA until the voltage dropped or sagged below 9.9V. Rechargeables hot off a charger at 11.2V would deliver 3.733V per LED. Alkys even more. Wouldn't that fry the LED's? I'll know if the 8AA holder will fit...

    Mag mod dilemma

A friend asked me to build a flashlight for him. I'm making a 3 x XPG @1000ma max per LED in a 2D maglight with multiple levels of brightness. Here's the problem, I have a extra 2D-8AA batter carrier to keep the cost down. I want it so he can use regular alkaline batteries or rechargeables and...

    Surefire KL5 mods

After you boil it, use strap wrenches. (Oops, I see that answer was already given.) Jeff

    Slightly modded e2dl

If it suits your needs, it doesn't matter what we think. On that note, I'm not a big fan of the clip. I had one on my lioncub and it wasn't very strong. Is that a GITD tail cap? Those can be very handy camping outdoors...BUT It makes your Surefire look like a knock-off from china. But if it...

    Elektrolumens XM-3 XP-G R2

My Elektrolumens XM-3 was my first custom light. Technology has outdated it. It was my favorite camping light many years ago. Tough as nails! Decided to upgrade it to an XP-G and get it back out in the woods again. Popped out the old emitter. Used a penny to shim it to the correct height...

    Lioncub LED upgrade advice

Installed the XP-G R5, McR20 light OP. Ground down a dime to shim it a little and used arctic silver. It's MUCH brighter than the Lux III. Gets a little warm. Too bad the head was designed like it was and doesn't allow all the light through. Perhaps I'll find someone to machine the opening a...

    Lioncub LED upgrade advice

The light was a limited run for people here 6 years ago. Newer lights now are brighter and more efficient. With an upgrade to my lioncub, I might get another 6 years out of it without spending lots of money. ($8) I'm not sure what your needs are for a flashlight but some brands to consider are...

    Lioncub LED upgrade advice

Ordered a couple different options from ledsupply.com One XP-G R2 4000K and a couple XP-G R5 6500K. Figured it would fit the reflector better than the XM-L. We'll see in a few days how well this pans out. Jeff

    Lioncub LED upgrade advice

I'm looking to upgrade my Lioncub Lux III TWOJ star. The driver outputs 3.5V @ 830ma at max and 5.3ma at minimum output. What would be the easiest drop in? Cree XP-G R5 or a floodier XM-L T6? I just want to use something that only needs to be soldered and use a little thermal compound. It has...
