Thanks for reviewing this for us... I kinda want one. How did you get that price? The website shows 75.

    streamlight seige lantern

Red mode is nice, I would be more likely to use that than beacon.

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

I installed an XM-L2 neutral (4000K), 1.4amp 3 mode linear driver, and clicky switch. I tried the XML mod with the stock driver, but it didn't work correctly due to the change in forward voltage. (it was way to hot)

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

I just modded one of the new 240 lumen models from amazon. They have tweaked the heatsink a little. The fins are now veritcal instead of horizontal, and the fins kind of wrap around the 24mm mcpcb. I prefer the old heatsink personally.

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

clockclimb: very cool mod. I've always wanted to try to find a way to add more heatsinking to this lantern. Have you found a way to seal it back up to keep the bugs out and possibly light rain?

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme's Bigger Brother, Where is it?

The video claims it takes 8 cells, but the description claims 6 cells. I would guess 8 cells in a serial arrangement, 4 leds in a serial arrangement, around 3v forward voltage each, and a linear driver for the main switch. Did someone buy it?

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme's Bigger Brother, Where is it?

Hey Everyone, I've seen a lantern here and there that looks like the Rayovac Sportsman Extreme, but its bigger and takes 6D cells. Its branded under different names, but none of them are Rayovac. The only one I can find is the Eureka! Warrior 400 on amazon, and the price is a bit steep for...

Camping: LED visibility (spectrum) vs incan! Lantern recommendation

I'm curious if you have tried any neutral tint or warm tint LEDs (flashlights/headlamps/lanterns)? It sounds to me that what you are describing is a primary reason people get neutral tints. A neutral tinted headlamp gets by far the most use when I am camping.

Nice mod BigRiz, and nice comparison shots!

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

Nice. Looking forward to your testing. I've used mine on high for hours while camping in warm weather. At the time I didn't bother to open it up and see how hot it was getting. Do you have a thermometer or something to take some readings?

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

I wonder if you can get some temperature readings on the LED heatsink? I know that LEDs can safely get hotter than we can touch, but that we always try to keep them cooler than we can touch for safety. I've never accurately measured the temp of the heatsink in my lanterns either.

No shock, just heat (maybe). Its a good idea to test, I'm curious what you find.

I'm not sure how hot they get. Your idea does sound good.

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

Yes, the solder joints must be below the top of the chips, or the heatsink will short the + and -.

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

The chips are the hot part on a linear driver, if you heatsink them all is good. I always heatsink my drivers if possible just as a failsafe, but it may not be necessary. I cant comment on the 1A driver personally. 2AA in series is how I always test my LEDs. Just close your eyes before...

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

The switch fits tight, plus it gets soldered in. You have to use a little elbow grease to get it in the groove, you'll see when you try it. Mine was too tight at first, then I sanded it a little where the groove touches the driver. I secured my driver with thermal epoxy to the bottom metal...

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

I'm no expert, and I might have the terminology wrong, but... The switch is part of the black BATT wire (-). It doesn't really have polarity. The switch just connects/disconnects the negative battery terminal to/from the driver.

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

My best guess is that the more expensive 'perfect regulated' board has better regulation. Perhaps it is boost+linear, but the voltage range doesn't really give any clues. During my testing I didn't really see any stepping down. It was on high for 6 hours, then went straight to the flashing...

Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 300 Lumen Lantern - MORE INFO ???

One thing that helps me is to not worry too much about making a mistake. Its just human nature that the first try is a learning experience, and the second try will be better. Worst case you have to order another driver and wait a week for it to arrive. One thing I find really helpful is the...
