Buy a computer now or wait until Vista, your thoughts?

+1 on the buy now. I'm not happy about the DRM in Vista and all the bug brother stuff. I'm running XP and when it has its support removed by MS I hope to have a happy Linux system ready to take over the hardware. Cheers

    Your smallest USB flash drive

If thats a SD card then the dimensions are roughly (all mm) 2x24x32 = 1536mm^2. The Kingmax is roughly 2.2x12x34=898mm^2. The SD card is approx 70% bigger than the Kingmax. Cheers.

    Your smallest USB flash drive

Kingmax is the smallest. I think. Left to right: SD card, PQI Intelligent Stick, Kingmax. The kingmax claims to be waterproof and comes with no protection for the contacts. Not the fastest but rediculously small. But I said that about the iStick before the Kingmax came out. That sony...

how good are fisher space pens?

I don't often write upside down, under water or in space. Everytime I do write I don't want to start with a blotch. Hence my space pen is in a box. I carry a Comfortmate retractable pen. (several of them) Cheers

    Powering 12V cigarette lighter adaptors

Yes, You can buy the component sockets. They can be bought to fit into car/boat interiors. You can get ones to wire up yourself. I generally had them attached to 12V SLA batteries but there is no harm in making up a battery pack. You can get battery jump-starters and boosters with the...

Can I salvage files from a flash drive with a corrupt file system? (000000.00000)

I've used a little freeware app called Restoration on a disk with XP on it. It finds all those files you thought you'd deleted. Works on USB drives too. Restoration at snapfiles. Cheers and good luck.

    Flash drive/Xvid help

Might be the speed of reads from the drive. Lets say 60min vid = 700Mb thats a transfer rate of 11Mb/s. Your drive may not be up to this. (despite what the drive blurb says). <EDIT: Doh, Just re-read this and with 60 seconds in a minute the transfer rate would be 200kb/s not 11Mb. Even USB...

Looking for a good document container

Ortlieb make a range of waterproof bags and document wallets. I know they're German but I'm sure there is an equivalent in the US ( or imports). They make some waterproof stuff sacks that would take the full folder and some clothes etc etc. The only document wallet seems to be A4 and too...

Fox 40 or Jet Screamer whistle?

My goodness. What am I thinking? I mean, if this was a straight choice between two lights costing not-very-much somebody would soon chime in with ..... ..... buy both. Silly me. Buy both. Cheers

Fox 40 or Jet Screamer whistle?

For keyring get the mini version of the Fox40 and file off the vanes underneath. Still earsplittingly loud but lots smaller. Cheers

    pepper spray

I used to commute 5 miles on a bicycle. Sometimes I used to come back late, after a drink, through crowds of revelers. Best way to avoid trouble is ..... avoid trouble. Change your route from the places where the crowds will be. On a bike a half mile detour/extra will not take all that long...

    titanium watch, ideas please?

Thanks, I'm not a big fan of too many turny things. I have looked at the Seikos. I'll take a risk on the Momentum. Again under different circumstances I'd get a Traser or similar but the watch is to sit with a silver ring so I'll be saving up for something with tritium in it. Cheers

    2 weeks travel bag suggestions

The other thing I found was, wear all the clothing you can. Wear your jacket. Stuff the pockets full of gear/gadgets. Carry your paperback and umbrella in your hand. Wear your camera round your neck. Wear two pairs of socks. Wear your heavy shoes and keep the light ones in the bag. Take a...
