    Headlamp for backpacking

Yes indeed! The Spark throwers come with a frosted lens that can exchanged for the clear lens in about 30 seconds. They cut the output substantially, of course, but do produce a wonderfully smooth flood beam.

    Headlamp for backpacking

The right headlamp for you will depend upon the primary purpose it is intended to fill. For example, will you be using it primarily to set up camp after dark, for reading or rummaging through your gear, or for hiking after dark? For the former two uses, you will be better served with a flood...

New member, Zebralight comments and battery questions

My granddad always told me "buy nice or buy twice". Nothing has changed, especially when it comes to lights, batteries and chargers.

New member, Zebralight comments and battery questions

Welcome to CPF! I also have a 502d and it runs fine on eneloops. Not knowing what charger you have been using for your Energizer rechargeable batteries (which are probably NiMH rather than alkaline) I cannot be certain that it will safely charge your eneloops but it probably will. Having said...

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

Well, the replacement ST-5 is here, and works well with both eneloop and 14500 batteries. For my (outside) purposes, the beam with the clear lens is nearly ideal, albeit a bit on the warm side for my tastes. All in all, it will be a useful bit of kit. But, I must admit that I strongly prefer...

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

Many thanks, ryguy24000! Hope springs internal, and I'm hopeful that my replacement ST5 will function normally. Either way, I'll report my experience in this thread.

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

I would be very interested, ryguy24000, in hearing more about which model Sparks and the sorts of difficulties you have experienced. Thanks in advance.

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

My Spark ST-5 arrived from GoingGear on Friday. Alas, it was DOA: Would not illuminate with any battery source, be it alkaline, 14500 or eneloop. It is now on its way back to GG for replacement. Sigh!

A headlamp with few specific demands for a world downfall.

cxax, I recommend you think carefully about how you plan to use a headlamp in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. Typically, you will find that a headlamp is useful for arms-length to very short range (perhaps 10 meters) tasks that require two hands to accomplish. For longer distances, a hand-held torch is...

    coast headlamps? or recomend another?

If an unreliable headlamp with a ringy beam is all you need, one from Coast may suit. However, you can get a MUCH better headlamp for not much more than your $30 target from Black Diamond, Princeton Tec or Petzl.

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

Sorry to have mislead you, B0wz3r. I already own two Zebralights, the SC600 and the H502, and like them a great deal. However, as you note, the Spark is intended for a slightly different circumstance, i.e., working outside at night. While I find that the H502 is just about perfect for indoors...

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

Thanks for your responses to my query, Gents, especially your comments, B0wz3r. Your information allowed me to make a decision, and I ordered a 190NW ST5 from goingear this morning. Thanks again for the help!

How Do You Use Your Spark ST-5

I own the Zebralight H502d but find it a bit too floody for use outdoors. Consequently, I am contemplating the purchase of a Spark ST-5, and am very curious as to how other CPF'rs utilize this headlamp: Indoors? Outdoors? With the clear or frosted lens? With eneloop or 14500? Are you happy...

Having a hard time choosing between H51c and H51fc

lachlanf, rather than vacillate over whether a normal or flood beam would better suit your needs, why not get both in one light? The Spark ST5 comes in a neutral white tint, runs on a single AA (or 14500 lithium) battery, costs about the same as the Zebralight, and, most importantly, comes with...

Need headlamp for general use that runs li-ion

gripnSURFIRE, I am confident that the overwhelming majority of flashaholics here would advise against the purchase of a cheap charger for your eneloops. At best a cheap charger will dramatically shorten the lifespan of your cells; at worst it may burn your house down! As a wise uncle of mine...
