lecture on lithium cell internal short-circuits

I found this nifty lecture titled Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Study Using Multi-Physics Internals Short-Circuit Model at this link (opens PDF file): http://www.nrel.gov/vehiclesandfuels/energystorage/pdfs/45856.pdf Sadly, these are only the slides. It takes some patient study to understand...

    Duraloops are alive and well

Just a heads up: I got a package of the 'made in japan' and white paper disk on top at W*lgreens on sale (Gilman/Berkeley/SF bay area /Cal). They are usually $17 for a four pack, but I just a pack for $10.

Fraudulently labeled NiMH AA 'purple' batteries on eBay

Ahem. Humbly suggest you avoid "bargains" on Ebay or elsewhere. Stick to sellers that are well known here on CPF, and I can guarantee you that you will get value for your money.

    18650 current draw?

I have AW's 18650 protected. I have been using it to power EL's EDC-P7 (it goes direct drive); I get about 45 minutes of light before it starts to dim. It works like a champ. Do not remember how many amps it pulls, but I am sure someone can calculate the current draw.

    coin cell batteries:NEED ADVICE, please

Might I suggest a different tack? Try replacing the LED in your scope with an LED with a lower output. You can get an LED that, with the same batts, will give you lower output but longer batt life. Course, I am hopelessly klutzy of on these things. However, there are many competent modders here...

    Basics and a battery charger

The Sony charger you list is excellent, and will surely do the job. However, PLEASE, PLEASE read the instructions. They will tell you about rejuvinating questionable batteries, and when to know when your batteries need changing. I am not familiar with the specific batteries you mention, but they...

    Is this batt rechargeable?

Another giveaway is the capacity. 800mAH is primary. A rechargeable is around 250-300 mAH.

    Battery for "Malibu" lights?

Try getting 4 spanking, new NiCd's. 2 for the light (recycle the ones that came with it), and 2 as back up. For the backups: stick 'me into an stupid, overnight, trickle charger (many places to get 'em; my favorite for NiCd's is batteryjunction). So, you always have a full charged back-up batt...

    Run time test: Energizer 2500MAh NiMH & Nite-Ize LRB-07-PR-ML

The main culprit here is the budget power-failure light Vector BL350. When I first bought it, it had 2 generic NiCd’s. Once a month, I would completely drain them to give them a bit of exercise and so I could judge when they needed replacing. Problem: this beastie comes with a typical, generic...

Energy required to recharge NiMH batteries?

Darn: KWH, not H. OK, so here is the rest of my calculation :shakehead: Look at the bottom of my trickle charger, it takes 6 watts, so: KWH = 17 hrs * 6 watts ÷ 1000 KWH = 0.10 KWH utility bill says 12¢ per KWH, so 12¢ * 0.10 KWH = 1.2¢ to charge an AA Eneloop

    Older Ni-Cd charger for NiMh?

Nope. Not for NiMH. However, keep it. I find NiCd AA and AAA to be extremely useful, versatile, tolerant of abuse, not to mention cheap.

Energy required to recharge NiMH batteries?

OK, this is the stupid-back-of-the-envelope-calcutation I use for NiMH and NiCd (but NOT Li-anything). Say you have have Eneloop AA's rated at 2000mAH = 2.0 AH You have a stupid, budget trickle charger that gives 150 mAH=0.15A So: hours to charge = capacity÷(applied current*efficiency factor)...

Kids toys - eneloops or go cheap?

:nana:Not always (and this includes me). IME, kids will run-down a battery run gizmo until it is dead, dead, dead, and then ask to make the batts live again. NiCd's will take this sort of abuse consistently and long term, so these are what I use. Granted, the runtime is barely half of equivalent...

    Tenergy Dual-Bay 18650 Wall Charger

Also just noticed this product. I believe that it is a new offering, inasmuchas I have never seen it before. Suggest you email the website directly; also batteryjunction would be a resource-they do not list this item, but it is the main source of other Tenergy batts and chargers (this is where I...

    Charging alkalines in NIMH Charger

Yeah, when I was a kid, Radio Trash sold a charger (IIRC a NiCd one) that was advertised to also recharge ANY alky batt. OK: it worked, sort of. It would work only a few times (say, half a dozen on a good day during a leap year), and the capacity of the 'recharged' alky was only a tiny fraction...

    18650 leap...?

Humbly suggest you studiously ignore ALL Li-ions, until you HAVE to get one. Truth or Dare: I have dozens of great torches, and not a single Li-Ion torch among them, because I feel that the $$$ and danger and unreliability are not worth the gain. I just got EL's EDC-P7, and had to get a 18650...

    9v battery question

Ahem. I am the safety officer and buyer for a small factory. We do NOT have those puny, idiotic, $15, round white plastic, battery-run toys protecting our facilities. We use something much like THIS: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000J34ET6/?tag=cpf0b6-20 This guy is suitable for installation in your...

    NiMH AA (non-LSD): Which ones?

Ahhh...now student understand. Consider AA NiMH's: 2000mAH Eneloops, and 2700 mAH Enerjunks. 1) as a practical matter, you will NOT notice a difference in capacity between the 2 in heavy-demand, everyday applications. 2) they are pretty much the same $$$ 3) the 'lower' capacity Eneloops will...
