    Best Home Lighting

would HID's be out of the question? The most beautiful lighting I ever saw was a bank of lights (not sure they were HID's; might have been simple floods) pointed at a wooden, cathedral-type ceiling painted in a light, reflective color. The effect of the indirect lighting was dramatic, not to...

    My Guinness Lite!

 You could epoxy the wires on the outside of a full can, and you would have the world's first beer-cooled LED lamp. Um, you should then pop the top just in case the heat causes enough pressure to explode the can, but that would waste a perfectly good beer. :ohgeez:

Why LED screw-base bulbs are a bad idea

Re: Response to LEDNinja, and a few others Hmm, beg to differ, big time. 1) Yes, we do have exclusively FL's at work, but only because that is what was installed when our company first moved in to it's current location. Upgrading/improving is not an economic option. 2) You are moving into a...

Somebody school me on fluorescent lamps and ballasts

Those 8-footers are a royal pain-in-the-u-know-what to change. We have 'em at work, and it is a 2 person job. Before you decide, check on the prices of T12, T8, and button replacement tubes in your area. I have discovered a rather dramatic difference in $.

Help converting my house to LED please.

There are some interesting LED fixtures here: http://ledsupply.com/led-fixtures.php I have been curious about these for a while. Anyone tried them? Worthwhile?

How Many Watts for a Strand of Christmas Lights?

I have a 60 LED strand of C6's that, according to the included instructions, takes only 5 watts. I also have a 70 mini-incan strand that seems to be 3.5 volts and 0.4 watts, so total usage is 70x0.4=28 watts. Does this seem feasible? I only ask because these beasties are all made-in-China, so...

    CFL real power used TEST

Thanks for your power consumption tests. I also was curious about the accuracy of the claims on the package. OK: so here is my question. Is there any way for you to figure out how much juice the ballasts consume in the first few seconds, before the CFL stabilizes?

    Sylvania Dot-It Golden Dragon?

Thanks for the report: now I really want 'em. Course, this means that I cannot use them for what I had originally planned: under the cabinet light to replace a fluorescent fixture. If I chop onions, it'll flash on/off a bazillion times by the time dinner is ready.

    Sylvania Dot-It Golden Dragon?

Interesting, I think I will try a few. I found a couple of websites where they cost $10 each. OK, now for the flashaholic questions: 1) any problem with heat build up and dimming after a few minutes? 2) did not know it was auto-off and motion activated. Do these work OK? 3) how long on a full...

    Sylvania Dot-It Golden Dragon?

Saw this: http://www.sylvaniaonlinestore.com/p-61-golden-dragon-under-the-cabinet-light-silver.aspx Anyone know anything about it? Is it worth $16? IIRC, the golden dragon puts out like 30L.

    Field Test: 24-LED “Light Bulb”

Uh, oh; spoke too soon :poof:. Dang, it was a nice little light: for only a watt or two (actually 5, I think), I got nice light that was reasonably homogenous. I was not keeping exact count, but I think I got about 50 to 75 hours of service. OOC, and using my high school electronics knowledge...

    Field Test: 24-LED “Light Bulb”

Actually, it is not a showerhead, but a long, rectangular column (dang; wish I had a webcam), and 6 LED's on each side. The entire thing is encased in a textured plastic tube 3 inches long. I forgot to add my own snarky comments about my skepticism about the long term reliability. The 5mm's...

    Field Test: 24-LED “Light Bulb”

I got one of these at the local Ace Hardware. Unfortunately, there was no packaging since it was a small cardboard shipper with a bunch of “bulbs” in it, so I cannot tell you what the name is, or what the specs are. However, I am reasonably sure that this one is representative of other, similar...

    New CFL bulb is dim

Depends: real answer, or the legal one? Technically, a 105w thingie in a 100w receptacle is a big no-no, and could (at least in theory) get you a citation from a building/fire inspector (like using one of those extenders, plugging in 8 different things into a 2-receptacle outlet, even though...

    New CFL bulb is dim

I had the same experience. My kitchen is light by a single 100w incan fixture. So, I stuck in a 35w CFL (equiv to 150w incan) to get more light. First time I turned it on, nice: much brighter. I left to do a few things (not sure how long, but 1/2 hour is not unreasonable), and went back to get a...

LED Christmas Lights: Why Don't They Blink?

Just got some strings. They consume only 5W vs. 20 or 50 or 70 watts for traditional Christmas strings. Understand the green advantages. Still: how come they don't blink at random intervals like cheap, generic Christmas lights? To me, it aint Christmas unless they blink. Is there a way I can...
