    Extremely newbie question.

The absolutely easiest way to do that is to go to any big box store and buy a cheap flashlight that sort of looks like what you want. Then you modify it by adding your choice of LED, Driver, battery, etc. There is a "modding" sub forum here that has a million ways to modify a light. Dan

easy explanation asked for aluminium/Copper/silver, pls

That is a valid argument only in very constrained circumstances. In the real world you will never find a need that will justify the expense and added technologic problems. The question that has not been asked is this; Is there some value added by using diamond over other substances...

Looking to get into LED mods...

There are several aspects to modding a light. There is appearance; how does it look and how well does it all fit? There is electrical; What electronics are needed for a particular LED and battery combination? There is mechanical; how are all of the parts mated together? There is heat...

easy explanation asked for aluminium/Copper/silver, pls

You are quite entitled to your opinion, but I find that it does not match my experiences or measurements. No matter what your material, the heat is being generated continuously inside the light and has to leave it somehow. A large mass without an effective way to shed heat only delays the...

easy explanation asked for aluminium/Copper/silver, pls

There is often confusion about the benefit of a body that is slow to heat up. Some think that the slower transfer of heat means that the heat sink is more efficient. Others contend that the faster the heat gets to the surface of the flashlight, the more effective it is. The truth is that the...

easy explanation asked for aluminium/Copper/silver, pls

AnAppleSnail nailed it. Try to imagine heat to be like water, and the LED as a mountain spring filling a pond. You can keep the pond from flooding if you soak up the water with a sponge, and that's like having a massive heat sink. Eventually the sponge is as wet as it can be, and can hold...

    MiniMag 2xAA mega upgrade ideas

Any of the 3 watt drop-ins will give you an astounding amount of light in comparison to the original. It will still have the same feel and look for that bit of nostalgia. Avoid the 'Nite Ize' drop-ins. They always under perform. I like to run 2xAA using the energizer lithiums. Lots of run...

Building my first Flashlight- Maglite 3D Upgrade...

The part you need is a step down converter. It's known as a 'buck' converter. The converter takes the 9 volt output from the 6 AA cells and outputs the lower voltage. The converters are easy to wire in. It's best to do some more reading to find out about heat sinking, voltage regulation...

Did I fry my LEDs or just the driver?

The LEDS are a variable current load, using little or no current until it reaches a threshold, then it uses more and more current in response to very small changes in the voltage. Among other things, a resistor provides limit on how low the resistance can sink. A 3 pin voltage regulator...

Did I fry my LEDs or just the driver?

For the next time.... That module has a step-up converter, so it will draw enough amps to convert to the needed voltage to drive the LED at the set current. In short, it was probably pulling more than 5 amps through the UBEC in order to get the current it needed to step up the voltage to run...

correct way to wire tripple p7?

But the momentary switch is to provide a signal to the converter that Will (wquiles) was using. I do not have the schematic for the der wichtels driver, so I can't say if it needs just a control or if it needs power to be switched off. Daniel

What are the components that comprise an LED fixture?

That's basically it. The 'star' might be better thought of as a pre-mounted heatsink, which can be any shape. The copper backed pcb is only important if the LED is mounted to the PCB. It acts as heat dispersal path. There's got to be a good design site, but I've not found it. Some of...

How do I make a two stage tail switch for a minimag

There was once a nice write-up (complete with pictures) that explained how to convert a kroll switch to be two stage. I called it hi/low, and it was posted around November of 2003 or 2004. I can't find it. :( Daniel

    I need a modder for a project. 7 C streamlight mod..

Re: I need a modder for a project. 7 C streamlight mod.. I've not seen the streamlight 7, so I don't know what it looks like. That makes it kind of hard to make any valid statements..... How about a few pictures, measurements, etc? A ruler next to the light might help. Daniel

    Help with a trim ring

To get such a thin gasket you might need to resort to gasket material. One possibility is to spread a very, very thin layer of RTV (liquid rubber) on the edge of the reflector. Let it dry overnight so that it can finish outgassing. You can buy RTV sealer in many different colors at your...

What can be driven by 1xaa? (want to mod an Elly)

Swapping an energizer lithium 1AA will allow the stock board to pull higher current. I have an elly modded with a P4 and it does quite nicely for a 1 watt light. ( it pulls .85 amps at ~ 1.5 volts and I fudge by estimating 80% efficiency) It's brighter than my S bin lux III at 3 watts. Daniel
