Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

Glad to hear it works! Thanks for testing! Could you please post photos of the light head assembled and disassembled? I'd love to see how they seal the lens and how you did the switching. Cheers, David

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

Thanks for your thoughts. The appeal of a Chinese bike lights is that for less than $50 you get a set of batteries, led's, optics, a driver (of unknown quality) and a torch head that may or may not be able to be sealed successfully for underwater use. I've asked the question because I've never...

Using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head?

Has anyone considered using a cheap Chinese bike light as a canister light head? Would need a new lens and fill a couple of holes... Would it work??

It wasn't too bad. Remove the screw down ring with a pair of needle nose pliers. The pill will fall forward a few cm and get caught by the white wire connected to the plastic plug. I rotated the pill 90 degrees and used a small screw driver to push the white disc out. Then I unsoldered the...

Yup. Not sure what the driver is. There's a small microprocessor and a current limiting chip. The white wire attaches to the positive terminal of the battery via the white plastic disc.

Here is the LED pill in the TR-J1 Here is the back of the pill: Now what you've been waiting for- the driver:

Further to what 350xfire said, depending on the multi-meter you have, you may need to move your red lead from the volt port to the current port. The black lead can stay in common.

Will try again when I get home. It certainly did not want to fall out when turned upside down. :-) On the flip side, the plastic slug around the positive terminal on the other side of the pill definately does not twist out. :-/

Can you try removing the led/driver? Unscrew the retaining ring with a pair of pliers and the pill should pop right out.

My TR-J1 arrived yesterday. At the tailcap mine draws 1.5A in high, .75A in medium and .15A in low. Any tips on removing the lens? I don't want to mess up the gasket prying it out.

Good work. Don't forget the driver efficiency, so LED current is probably around 1.5A. Still reasonable for a backup light.

Xtar D06 turns on in water when switched off!

:-) Thanks Will. The issue happens when it is unscrewed slightly underwater, which it appears it is not meant to do. The torch is not supposed to be twist on/off. Out of water this acts as a safety lock-out. Seems this doesn't work as intended underwater. :-/

Xtar D06 turns on in water when switched off!

XTAR's official response was to keep the torch screwed together while underwater and to jam something int he switch to prevent it from turning on when not intended. I use a rubber band to hold the switch down when diving. Not a huge deal. It is a fantastic torch for the size. Great...

Xtar D06 turns on in water when switched off!

Happens on land and in the water at depth. What's unusual is that it only happens when the magnet is closest to the linear hall effect sensor. I have also noticed corrosion around where the torch has been scratched through normal use. Seems the current from the torch head is conducting...

Xtar D06 turns on in water when switched off!

Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ekA9io3WIA Out of the water it works normally. There is supposed to be a safety lockout where the torch is slightly unscrewed. When placed in sea water the torch turns on. Oh, and it shocks you. Any ideas?

UK C8 eLed Plus modification... Pic heavy, beamshots and comparisons!

I gutted the factory driver and only kept the switch. I cut traces on the PCB to avoid shorts. I used a DX driver modified for one mode. The driver you choose depends on the battery pack you want to run.

Have you checked the current draw in each mode? If they're the same your driver may be toast. Time to upgrade it. :-)

    New divelight @ Manafont

The light in question has a linear hall effect sensor. The sensor goes into a microprocessor's a to d input. Based on the input it adjusts the pwm brightness. The closer the magnet is to the sensor the brighter the light. In reality there are 12 to 20 visible steps between off and full. It's the...
