0.1V KD Li-Ion 32600

So I've got this KD D Li-Ion cell. It measures 0.1V. My others after sitting for a while read 4.11 and 4.12V. I just hooked it up to my power supply. I set V @ 4.0V and the current limit is now at 0.26A. It's been on there for a few minutes and is up to 2.1V. The cell is still cool to the touch. As it was before charging.
I know all the warnings and am about to stop soon anyway since I'm never going to trust the cell again.

But I do have this 50V/20A power supply here... :devil:

Anyone ever intentionally overload a cell?

Probably not a good idea. I'm sure the li-ion experts will explain why not to but I definitely wouldn't try it.

I wouldn't do it indoors. I know what could happen.
As I write this, the cell is sitting on a concrete wall outside my house.

I was just wondering if someone here had done it.
Maybe I'll try to give it a "normal" charge (rate and voltage) outside to see if it would have gone wrong during a charge cycle. If nothing goes awry, then I might turn things up a bit. Maybe video it.
 
The first part I can appreciate - E.g. if someone less knowledgeable had gotten the lemon, what would it have done to them?

Just remember the whole crystal formation and internal ruptures, possible gas pockets. And especially don't forget the unpredictable arrival of the ending scene, noteworthy for the un-extinguishable lithium-fueled fire.

Maybe a great time to test a fire-proof charging bag if you've got access to one?

Might as well, for science. Just be careful, use goggles and earplugs, stand back with a fire extinguisher etc. Try and do the experiment in a ceramic or metal pot, as lithium fire is very persistant.
 
Why is this speaking of litium-fueled fires?
Lithium ion batteries have lots of nasty stuff in them, but no metallic lithium (even, I suppose, not in appreciable quantities when metallic lithium has been plated due to mistreatment of the cells).
There can be fire, but not of lithium itself.
Or am I mistaken?

This man speaks the truth.

Do whatever you want, but look up a couple "exploding li-ion" video's on youtube so you know what you could expect and take appropriate measures.

Oh, and if you decide to try a regular charge before the abuse, please share your results. Sounds interesting.
 
I'll only do it if I can do it "properly". I'm not just going to give it a 10C charge in my basement. :duck:

I'll be sure to have a video cam handy. I've seen several of the exploding Li-Ion laptop videos and exploding/venting Li-Po cells. But I've never seen one of the "D" size Li-Ion cells vented.
 
I'd be interested to see what happens when it is overloaded... but I'll echo the "safety first" suggestions. A respirator would also be a good idea; I believe the gas/fumes can be very bad for your health.
 
I remember someone did something similar a long time ago, IIRC it involved a 55 gallon drum, extremely long wires and a shed to hide in. pydpiper, I think?

Anyway.... LONG charging leads and LONG zoom lens on your video camera, ceramic pot to contain the shrapnel, and stay inside the foxhole or behind the sand bags.. that's gonna be quite a grenade you have there. Park the camera on a tripod and leave it running while you retreat to safety. Tough luck if the cam doesn't make it but we would still like you to be here with us!
