10,000,00 cp spotlight?

Re: 10,000 cp spotlight?

Very cool photos indeed! Thanks for posting them!

It is also interesting to note the beam shape. If you look closely it seems to converge maybe fifteen feet or so out of the light, and then start spreading out again. I have noticed this in some other photos as well, and I am sure it relates to that ellipsoidal vs parabolic discussion.

Re: 10,000 cp spotlight?

I received a 15MCP Thor today. My wifewoman just laughed when she saw it for the first time (the light, I mean) because it is so big it looks cartoonish. Like the episode of Gilligan's Island when they grew giant vegetables from irradiated seeds. Took it outside just now and it does put out an awesome amount of light. Pointed skyward, the beam just goes up to infinity, and shows the tons of pollen and junk that is floating in the air. A foggy or humid night will be even more cool. When blasting nearby houses, the beam has a lot of artifacts, but who cares - any human target under 100 yards will have their pupils clamp shut. I was concerned that the police would see it and and haul me down to the cop shop, so I ran back to my secret underground bunker. I can only imagine what an HID light will do. Having exhausted most other areas of flashlightdom, this is the next frontier for me.

Find it at www.natchezss.com by searching for "spotlight". $52 + shipping.

HID is significantly better, runtime is longer too. Using it in the bunker will be fun, but taking it outside, for walks etc, will be even more fun.

Here's my comparison of two 10MCP Thors. One's original and one has been modified with a 35W HID.

Both are fully charged

And after 50 minutes with just the high beam running on the unmodified Thor. 35W vs. 100W of battery drain. And I know my 35W HID Thor will run for just over 90 minutes at full brightness. When the battery voltage falls below 9 volts, the HID ballast shuts off. This is probably better for the seal lead acid battery then draining it completely.

Powernoodle,

I converted a 15mcp Thor to 50w HID and it is pretty amazing. Not a Maxabeam, but still insanely bright with good throw. It's definitely a good candidate for HID with all the space behind the reflector.

Lotsalumens,

I am interested. Where did you get your 50W HID Kit? Got any pics?

Re: 10,000 cp spotlight?

Lotsa and Jazz - I'd like to know this too. I asked many stupid questions when figuring out how to build a Mag85, and I'm going to ask many more stupid ones about the 50W HID. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: 10,000 cp spotlight?

Jazz,

Great pics, but it looks a little like the HID is out of focus. Putting the HID into the focal plane should make the hotspot much hotter from beginning to end (and the fact that it runs 90 minutes-plus, is amazing). The 35 watt HID hotspot is also amazing with the large reflector of the Thor, and personally, comparing it directly to the Maxabeam,... well,... um,... I didn't perceive a difference.
