In Jameco Electronics, February thru April volume, look at page 31, the high output LED's. it says they have the above-mentioned item. Is this possible??? it says:
10,000 mcd @ 20 mA w/ 3.5 vdc

Any lens can produce high millicandela values by sacrificing viewing angle.

Although the beam may be very bright, if it's too narrow, it's not useful for most flashlight applications.

Hosfelt sells a 10mm red-orange LED with a luminosity of 22,000 mcd. It shoots a beam pretty far, but its viewing angle is only like 6 degrees.

which brings up how almost useless the peak center spot values are on a chart.
one of the good advantages of the white led is its difuse glow around the edges.
often we compare against a mag light, but a mag has such a rotten beam pattern, and its concentration serves no perefrial purpose.
if your walking down a path with a mag, a wolverine could be just outside of the beam and you would walk right into it :)
but the leds light output pattern would give you some periferial site of the stuff outside of the beam.
also the beam on the mag is altering the iris of the eye by having so many rotten hot spots in it.
Useless facts
it takes the human eye up to 10 full minutes to adjust to total darkness, with a soft yet spotted beam the eye is less likely to drop the iris.

another OT useless observation on eye irises
my father drives a lot at night, now we all have driven at night, so think about this for a moment, your looking foreward to a mostly dark area (your iris opens up) while on the other side of the freeway these lights are ripping shreds across your retna, anyway in my fathers case his night driving cut a "loose retnal cores" in the exact same area that that light would be racing across his perifreal vision , i didnt mention it at the time, as it is still an ongoing observation that, these point lights when iris is wide open shred the retna, and over time casue holes in our vision.

also the first time i put a led light to working on a car, i realized how useless a mag had been for so long, as AIMING the blasted thing and trying to alighn a nut with a tool two feet away , while it closed off my iris, it never put the dang light on the nut.

light diffusion on the spot light directed 10-20 degrees with minor overflow out the sides, is a really darn good way to see.

so if these manufacturers would tell us what the TOTAL light output out of the sucker is, the approxomate degrees, instead of this totally USELESS mcd rating which only means that some blasted meter sees one hot spot.

course that doesnt mean that i wouldnt like to try some of these :)

oops i should point out that i dont think that leds or mag lights will make blind spots, it was OT ok :)
its all them thousands of watts of light going the other way on the freeway.

Hello,

Yeah i've seen the angle published
with the mcd rating on most led's, although
sometimes that info doesnt come from the
place you buy the led, so you have to look
elsewhere for the data.
Sometimes the surplus sources are a little
tricky too: once i bought 4 very bright
red led's and found they had a real nice
even pattern output, but then when i reordered
4 more of the same part number, i got units
that had a nasty 'target' pattern output.

Also, talking about comparing light output
patterns and such: I recently purchased
two new flashlights, both incandescent.
One is 2 x AA and the other is 1 AA and
guess how much they cost each?
$1.97 at Walmart :)
They both have pretty decent slide switches
on them too unlike the mag.
After inserting the batteries into the single
AA light and turning it on in a darkened room
i was quickly reminded of the nasty pattern
these incandescents can put out. GOD, the
pattern from the single AA looks like a
flower from Mars or something :)
The pattern from the dual AA light looks
quite even but is very very narrow which
sort of makes that useless too hehe.
I was sort of thinking of doing the LED mod
thing on these two anyway. Perhaps 4
led's in each. The switches are very nice
though, and i wish Mag Lite would have put
real slide switches on their Minimag's. They
put a very nice very elegant slide switch on
their double 'C' cell model flashlight,
(has anybody seen this one?) but its a much
bigger light than the Minimag.

Also, talking about Walmart: they recently
(about 4 weeks ago) got in about 25 to 50
more Brinkmann Long Life flashlights, and
yesterday when i went back they were all gone!

Something tells me the LED news is spreading.

Hello again,

I forgot to mention that a while back
i got one of those 10,000 mcd blue-green
led's and still havent found a use
for it (other then testing) because of its'
nastly looking target output pattern.
