I bought 10 leadlights from Z-bolt.com, all <5mW basis models. After POT moding all of them and testing them I ended up with some interesting results.

4 out of the 10 ended up under 10mW, which was a big surprise to me. I expected maybe 2 to end up with this poor of a response to the pot mod but I got 7.2mW, 7.8mW, 9.2mW and 9.6mW for these 4.

Another 4 out of 10 ended up under 20mW. I expected the majority of them to be in this range but only 4 made it this high. 12.1mW, 14.3mW, 16.0mW and 18.2mW. Not too bad.

Now for the good stuff. I got 2 that ended up being over 40mW!!! This was more surprising than having had 4 that failed to reach 10mW. I was not expecting to get any that made it over 30mW but I guess I got lucky with some great crystals in these two! Anyways one ended up at 48.1mW and the other was 47.3mW! These two are awesome, they will easily burn holes through black trash bags, cut electrical tape (if the tape is stretched) and BURN your skin in a second if you point it at a freckle or draw a black or red dot on the skin, even from 6 feet away. I held my arms as far apart as they could go and shined the laser at a black dot I drew on my left hand, using a wall to steady my aim. I'm about 6 feet tall so I figured the distance was about that. In about 2 seconds I had to stop, it STUNG! This also happened when I shined it at any dark freckles I have. The beam is great on these also, easily double the visibility of the 18mW one.
(NOTE: I am selling the 47.3mW model for only $150 in the B/S/T Non-lights section. It is a chrome model, brand new condition. Linked here http://www.candlepowerforums.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=897578&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)

I am really interested to know what, other than crystal quality/allignment, leads to such great discrepencies in power output capability when using the pot mod. Any ideas? Also, does anyone know where the cheapest prices are for unmoded leadlight 105's is?

Interesting - I don't think the 'lottery' probability of getting an efficient pointer is as large as it is made out to be. From the four I ordered from SuperBert - two breached 30mw... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Congratulations!
Did you measure the current draw?
If you've just turn the pot to the max position but the current draw are not very large(say <300mA), then u can modify the resistor to get more power.

Interesting study ... I guess it really is just 'pot luck' heheh.

Re: 10 leadlights from z-bolt, POT mod experiment!

I have been unable to measure my current draw, what is the cheapest way to do this?

Its better to have a Digital Multimeter with 10A DC current range. Romove the cap from the LD and connect two test lead on the case and positive tip of the battery.
