Is the 18650 lithium battery suitable replacement for 150A?

my old 150A 3.7 V lithium ions doesn't seem to hold charge for long time. I want to get replacement for my wolf eye 9M Cobra which uses 2X 150A batteries.

Hello Picard,

I believe the 150A is actually an 18500. The 18650 cell would be too large in diameter.

Tom

Are you sure about this ? I want to confirm the fact before I buy replacement battery.

150 is shorter than the 168 pila.

I know you need a 50 length but I don;t know if you need 17 or 18 diameter.

So its either 17500 or 18500

Hello Picard,

According to my notes, the 150A is the same as an 18500. The 150S is a 17500. The S size fits in SureFire lights. The A size is fatter.

It is probably best to double check this. I got the information from a post that AW made, but I can't find it.

You may want to PM him for a clarification.

SilverFox being our resident battery expert is correct. The 150A is the same size as an 18500. That's 18 mm diameter, 50 mm length and the fifth number 0 means cylindrical.

There something else though. Do you have a BC2 charger? In Pila world, the 150A became the 300P. The BC2 charger that was sold with the 150A's relied heavily on the protection circuit of the battery to terminate the charge. When Pila changed to the 300P series, they introduced the IBC charger. Pila doesn't recommend charging newer batteries in the old charger. More than a ploy to sell new stuff, it just might be dangerous.

Mike @ Pacific Tactical Solutions I believe still sells the older 150A batteries. I checked just now to be sure, but his site is down at the moment.

My last post is proof positive of the old axiom that, if you make a joke that is bad enough, you will kill any discussion stone dead.

Hello Lctorana,

What do you mean a joke...? :)

I actually looked into this. I think 150 amps is a little too much, but you could probably pulse at 90 amps.

Tom took the bait. Hook, line, & sinker.

Tom, while you are doing some testing....just for the good of the community, can you check out an old wive's tale for me. Let me know if you notice anything funny by touching your tongue accross the terminals of a charged 9V transistor battery. :p Thank you sir!

Hello LuxLuthor,

That one is pretty obvious, but if you want to try something, what happens if you dry your tongue before touching the 9 volt battery?

Tom

Tom, I give up. What happens?

Have you tried that with different manufacturers? I think you will be surprised at the results...and it may lead to a plethora of 'tongue-in-cheek' plots. :p

dont forget to mention that Pila cells are usually Protected cells.
so when speaking of "direct replacement" make sure you have protection, or know how or why it needs to exist.
also
a VERY old pila charger DEPENDED on protection, so you could have not only minor issues, but a disaster, if you dont get protected, or at least understand its purpose in life.
all of that suff can be checked for, i just mention it so you dont get a tri-lithium meltdown in the main reactor captain :eek:oo:

Yes, I make sure to always wear a condom when using my Pila batteries. :sssh:
