Just stared acquiring lights, ( aa's and 18650's for now) Question on using Cr123's in the 18650 lights; some listings show either. If not, what do I look for in specs (or inquire) to tell me its safe to substitute the 123's? I would use the 123's for backup or if I wanted to put a light in a vehicle (I've read hot vehicles are not good for the Li-ons)

Some lights can use both, like my Fenix PD32 and some lights can't, like my Zebralight SC-600 and three Convoy lights.

You need to know what voltage the driver board can handle. For the latter two above, they can handle 4.2v, for the former, it's ~6v.

Input voltage is what you want to look for. Some light makers give this spec, some don't, but they will tell you what batteries/cells you can use, more often than not.

Thanks for the reply; I see that voltage is the issue with components. Not sure many of the vendors will provide valid info, I may want to choose additional lights that specify up front.

Chris made a good point about voltage. Another point is the difference in diameter between CR123 and 18650.

If a light will accept an 18650, then it will accept CR123. A good example of this is a Solarforce L2P.

However, if a light says it accepts CR123, you'll need to do more research since a 18650 is slightly wider than a CR123. A good example of this is a Surefire 6P, which will not fit a 18650 without modification.
