18650 Light with Focus and Multi-Mode

Linger's comments
(I recieved your response re: demo x2000, if your situation changes let me know)

Threaded / twist adjustment - excellent. Make focusing the sole purpose of this set of threading. (access to the emitter / inside of the light can come through unscrewing the bezel and removing the lens.) To maximize the utililty of the focusing threads, on this product which is a multi-mode focusing flashlight, imho the threads are isolated at each end with o-rings and locked off from the rest of the light.

size - smaller is better. avoiding extra weight for decorative design features.

tail-standing, clips, candle mode, corkscrew - I like you're decision to make additional features available as post production add-on's. This streamlining highlights the core functions, satisfies minimallists, and give expert users access to the additions they find valuable.

I agree that clips and stuff could be accessories and this is what I was thinking of doing if I ever had flashlights made. I'm big on modular as I never seem to be able to find something that I LIKE.

The flats will be used for model and serial number info.

I also dont like flats on my torches 🙁 at best it doesnt look good, at worst it is weakening the structural integrity.

Isnt it possible to write the model/serial info around the head like on a Fenix TK10? (even though that still has flats.. grrr...)

Any more news? I'm excited about this light 🙂

Oh, just in case the notify don't work. Please let me know when you have lights ready to sell

re: don't always work ... first I'd heard that, thanx for feedback.

rmteo - emittors ... how are you feeling about a warm tint version? :twothumbs
yes!?!

Sometimes you have to 'manually' check your subscriptions. It would be a neat feature to have the list of subscribed threads on the first page, but they would make it even more busy. Just pick on the "List Subscriptions" under Control Panel every so often (twice a day for me)

+1 for Neutral/Warm Emitters. I only buy cool emitter lights if then can be modded/upgraded to a neutral/warm one.

I don't know about CPF in particular but I sit and wait for notification from forums and if I don't get any, I rarely visit them and then when I do, it turns out I DO have replies so no, I don't trust these 100%

The LED engine/module is a multi-mode with memory. The switch is a reverse clicky.
Hmm, there are lots of CPF'ers that dislike reverse clickies, I don't know the breakdown, perhaps there is a poll around here. I'm not a clickie fan, but I do like the forward momentary option from a forward clickie.
In low mode (estimated 20-25 lumens, 80mA current draw) you can expect close to 30 hours run time with a 18650.

BTW, although I have not mentioned it in this post, this light is being developed in parallel with another line of larger lights for duty use. This larger light is designed for 2C or 3C cells - easy availability of power sources is the primary consideration in this case. It will have similar features and I have been incorporating changes/improvements to it based on suggestions given here.
I was wondering about your 2xC/3xC research earlier. The 2xC is an excellent form factor, IMO. Is there a chance that the heads will be interchangeable between this version and the larger 'C-cell' versions? (The SureFire C-bodies & FM C-cell/C-body is a good example of this, I have some photos in the thread in my sig that sort of demonstrates the possibilities.)
Hmmmm, was hoping for a low mode lower than 20-25 lumens... That's not even Fenix low.
+1. I can't count how many complaints I've read on CPF that Fenix low's aren't low enough.

Good luck on your projects.

My initial focus is to get the C and D cell (2x first, followed by 3x) versions out first - the CR123/18650 version will follow later. There is a larger market for a compact, multi-function duty/work light using easily available power sources - there are already a large number of manufacturers of lights that take 123 type cells.

The larger lights have identical features but are more compact compared to other lights that take C/D cells. Shown here is the 2D and 2C flanked by a 2D M@G and a 6P for size comparison.

We really don't see good quality lights with bright beams in C cell, so I think you're on the right track in bringing those out first. It's a big product gap. Although if I were you I'd be allowing for the ability to move MC-E or P7 emitters into the body soon as you update the product line. LED technology seems to be moving fast and you want to stay on top of the crest. The larger bodies would have plenty of cooling ability, I bet.

I'm inclined to think that you really should look at the forward tailclicky instead of, or at least in addition to, the reverse clicky. Too many people in these circles are sticklers for that momentary-on ability.

I find that I really like my ITP's UI. Having a separate control for modes is really nice IMO. But I may not be representative of the larger consumer group there. The other thing I like about the ITP, though, is the super-low bottom end... something like 3 lumens, I think. Great by the bedside, I can use it when going to bed without waking the wife, but if I hear an intruder I have a good bright beam too. And folks who worry about getting stuck someplace dark for a long time (cavers, hikers, etc.) will really value a super-long runtime ability for emergencies. Maybe you could have high at max, medium at 30 to 50 lumens, and low at 5 lumens; just food for thought.

Focusing head..... a SUPER idea! Why more companies aren't doing this is beyond me. I have two of those cheap little zooms from DX (one in 3-AAA and one in 1-123) and I really really like the feature. The flood is so even almost from edge to edge, amazing for a $10 light, and the spot is so incredibly tight... and I think, "why isn't anyone else copying this idea??" Well, that's about to change. Now, imagine about 600 or 700 lumens out the front from a MC-E, with the same focusing ability. Wow, what a thrower we could have, and yet a perfect flood too.

For names... maybe Titan C2 and Titan C3? And the 18650 could be the Marathon, and the little 123 the Sprint or perhaps Sprinter. With the focusing ability from wide flood to tight spot, maybe the overall product name Medusa would fit. Feel free to write for my Paypal address if you like any of the names well enough to donate! We business types have to stick together. 🙂

Lower low is always good. I often use the 0.2L low of my HDS. 10 Lumens (Fenix low) is often way too much light.

Because the MC-E would actually KILL the throw. There has yet to be an MC-E that throws like a single die in a similar size head/reflector/optic. We saw this with LuxV versus LuxIII, which is why I never bought a LuxV - they just didn't put as much light down range where I needed it. The physics are still the same now as they were then. Keep the die area small to get a laser throw AND flood with the focusing optic. The XP-G might be the next step up, but that may reduce throw too with it's larger die size. Rebel or XP-E will likely have far more throw, especially when higher bins come out.

I for one like Mike's suggestions for names and hopes he gets some lights for them 🙂

I would also like to throw my suggestion in for brand name. How's Exodus for a brand name?

George

It's almost mid June...
any updates to the proposed time-line (earlier stated a few prototypes in June, run of 30 for July)
And, the warm tint emittor thing, any chance on a high cri / warm tint light?

Best of luck making my light,
Linger

I've got another brand name and I'm playing with a logo. Anyone interested in seeing it? Above all, the owner?

Yes, I wouldn't pass up some lights! :grin2:
