Help please,
a couple years ago I bought a Green 1D Maglite bored to accept 4 AA batts which included the battery holder and hole drilled in cap with chrome ring. Nicely done. I just found it and I cannot remember what bulbs were recommended or what one might do with such a light today with what is new in the last 2-3 years.

Can anyone offer any ideas. Seems like I got it from Modamag or FM.

TIA,
vhyper

It's still a great light. The past couple of years haven't taken anything away from it. It was designed to be the most powerful light running off of 4 AA batteries, even alkaline. It may still hold the title. That one uses FM's custom axial bulb. I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think it's his 4.3V axial. I'm sure he has more bulbs for it.

Depending on the voltage you are getting from the battery holder, I'd think you might consider one of the newly released, or soon to be released TerraLux Seoul P4 LED drop-ins. Could turn it into a pretty useful, and bright light. :)

I think the current drop-in (TLE-6EX) gives about 100 lumens for 4.5 volts, and about 150 lumens for anything over 6 volts.

However, I understand that a new LED drop-in designed specifically for 3-4.5 volts should be out by the end of May.

hello insomniacs,
thank you all for your ideas, even NOMAD. I slept on Nomad's suggestion but when I awoke my magnanimity had discharged. I put the red lead in my nose and the black lead, now the brown lead, well, you really don't want to know...anyway my batts WERE fully discharged. Must have been the prunes I had with lunch.

I put fresh batts in, adjusted the lamp and damn it is bright. The LED drop in is probably a good idea while my agoraphobia is in remission.

Regards,

It sounds like one of FM's custom cut-down lights. If so, your best bulb bet (assuming you have FM's battery holder with white delrin ends), is the 4V axial bulb. I believe that your battery holder is 3.7V, so the 4V axial will give you good light and moderate run time. FM lists two or three other bulbs that can be used with this set up. However, I fing that the 4V axial gives the best beam when using the stock reflector. Good luck.

How can a 4AA battery holder be 3.7v? 6v alkaline, or 4.8v Nimh.

I doubt a single Cree or Seoul will be able to touch that 4v axial bulb. If you're not planning on doing lots of work to make it a multi Cree light, I think the way it's designed to work is just perfect. I don't think people realize just how bright a 4 cell incan can be.
