Message from Official Arc Field Tester Carpe Diem to Peter Gransee:

Temporary switch failure occurred at 0800 hours on 06 October 2002. The switch refused to stay in a locked "on" position.

After carefully studying the several Official Arc Field Tester training manuals that were sent with the two switches I was fortunate to receive, I repaired the defective switch by cunningly giving it a gentle, but firm, "push" on the side of the switch with my right index finger.

This successful procedure occurred at 0837 on 06 October 2002, while facing in a Northeasterly direction and standing in the approximate center of my living room. I was at the time (as described in the protocol contained on Page 57 of Volume 3 of the training manual, entitled "Official Arc Tester Training Manual: Required Dress Code") wearing my Official Arc Field Tester cap and badge.

I`ll be sending to you (as described in the protocol contained on Page 103 of Volume 5 of the training manual, entitled "Official Arc Tester Training Manual: Supplemental Incident Reports") a fourteen page detailed report on the incident within the next couple of days.

I am finding that life as an Official Arc Field Tester is hard work, but very rewarding personally. I am sure that you will also be pleased to know that I wear the Arc Field Tester cap and badge with great pride.

And now...on with the further testing!

Re., vol 1, para 2.34.5.23 of the training manual. you must re-submit your report as you forgot to specify which cheek you had your tongue planted in! Shame on you!

Roy...

I feel so embarrassed, but thank you for pointing that out to me.

Peter...

My tongue was in my left cheek. My Supplemental Incident Report will reflect that fact in an attached addendum, labelled "Addendum A".

Hey,
I didn't get no stinkin' manual! What, some of us in the dark here? Since I couldn't get a failure with the switch, I passed it on to Jolly Roger to see if he could...... something about him and messing up some kind of dream.......... Figured he'd be a good test pilot.

Roy,

I thought the guys from the 5th dimension tried all of the numbers, including 42. Isn't that why they were interogating what's his name? So long and thanks for the fish..........

I`m sure that you have the same "Official Arc Field Tester Contract" that I do. Arc pays me $1.00 for each time I "click" the tail switch. To date, Peter owes me $47,878.00. And, of course, I`m still counting.

As you can see, I`ve taken my position as an "Official Arc Field Tester" pretty seriously. I deem it both an honor and a privilege.

God bless Peter Gransee!

You lucky, lucky, tester. You get to fill out one of the forms. Meanwhile I'm down here in Illinois switching hands due to thumb weariness; but still no reportable incidents.

You guys crack me up. Rub it in that I didn't produce any fancy literature.

So... do think the switch is at least fit to be an accessory (if not the default)?

Btw, just got the firt run of rev2 1x123 packs w/o switch. They are noticably smaller. I notice the threads turn a bit easy though. Maybe the o-ring is not tight enough?

I do like the tail switch, but I also like the existing "twist on" LS and its shorter length, which makes it easier to carry.

I would vote to keep the "twist on" as your default LS, but make the threads of the new LS`s deeper, just as you have done with the original LS`s. (The hybrid threads, IMHO, are uncomfortably too shallow to use in the "twist-on" mode...I`m afraid of twisting it too far when trying to turn it off, and accidentally unscrewing the LED head. For that reason, the tail switch is almost a necessity with the hybrids.)

The tail switch should certainly, however, be kept as an option. I know there are a lot of people out there who like them, and the tail switch is a nice feature. I would certainly buy a bunch of them!

With respect to the O-rings on the rev2 units, I`d vote for an O-ring giving you a tighter fit. Once you stop turning the LS head, it should stay there and not accidentally turn further in you pocket.

Sorry, but it`s time to go now. I have to put on my Official Arc Field Tester cap and badge..."Testing Time" is coming up!

FINDINGS:

As of today, I have not been able to have the switch malfunction. The only concern that I have is about the almost 10% decrease in brightness when using the switch! I wish someone else would verify what I measured or show me where I might have screwed up.

RECOMENDATIONS:

Offer the switch as an accessory! That way owners of Version 1 lights could have the switch if they wished.

I agree that to continue ruling the world of "light Density" the original 123 holder needs to be available. The kroll offers the usefull feature and advantage of tail activated momentary as well as permenant on/off. Offering this power pak certainly gives your customers more options as well as allows the factory seconds with the Flex Syndrome a new lease on life!

The Kroll was designed to retrofit the Mag tail cap and consequently is much taller than needed. The ideal solution would be for a new tail switch to be designed both smaller and shorter in length. It could have more robust contacts and a non resistive path for the ground. A good tail switch could have viable applications beyond the Arc line and perhaps selling it as a stand alone to other modders or manufacturers would help defray the tooling and large lot, order quantities involved. Certainly having a spring in the battery train keeps the load off the PCB.

Realizing I am not a modder like many of the "testers" and not able to do run-time tests like Roy nor consumer reports type endurance tests,

I've come to the realization that I'm pretty useless among this crowd.

What I HAVE been able to do is try the tailswitch with all the battery brands I have. These range from tekcell to surefire. I'm not running them dry. I'm just trying them all out and clicking like crazy. I can't say I've had trouble with any battery. The switch has worked for me. I still prefer the look of the twist-on switch and might go back to it after some more testing, but I do like the easy on and off one handed use the switch affords.

Roy, I don't have a light meter but I don't see the difference with my eye. I have two, used them both: picture this, in a dark bathroom ~ 12 feet long, about 40 minutes of switching paks, eyes adjusting, people pounding on the door, 911 called by my loved ones, I wouldn't come out. I was busy with light testing. NAH 911 wasn't called but I hit a new level of odd with my lady!

Being technically "useless", I have discovered, has its distinct advantages on the CPF.

No difficult tasks are expected of you, but, as an Official Arc Field Tester, you still get to walk around the town wearing your Official Arc Field Tester cap and badge.

Life doesn`t get much better than that!

TOB9595...

I have a 1/2 inch split ring on one of my tail switch units that has worked well.

It`s small enough to stay out of the way when I carry the flashlight in one of my pockets and doesn`t interfere at all with the use of the switch, but large enough to let you attach the flashlight to a key chain, etc., if you want to.

I put these split rings on all of my Arc LS`s, andI bought several packets of them for about $2.00 each at a sporting goods store, in the fishing section.
