WS6Extreme, you can find out about the badboy here .
Then when you are ready to buy just go to dat2zip's store .

I would wire them 3 serial X 10 parallel and use a downboy300 (the nearest would be 0.15Ohm sense resistor=> 330mA).

Another alternative would be 5 serial x 6 parallel with a badboy180 (0.27 Ohm sense resistor).

The downboy would run in regulation above about 11V (you could use the reduced brightness below 11V as low bat. indicator), the badboy would be in regulation above about 3..4V.

You should connect only the ends of the serial strings in parallel => reduces the influence of Vf variation.

My fault, I failed to mention that they are allready wired parallel.

No Problem! You can take a DB917 (is a very common version with 0.1+0.12ohm sense resistor) or DB1000 (is currently available in the shoppe)
DB1000

OK, I did. I'll take 26000mcd at 20 mA and 20 degrees over 35000mcd at 80 mA and 15 degrees anyday. If these were [and I'm sure they are not, this is just a hypothetical] uniform intensity across the 20 and 15 degree beams, 26000mcd at 20 degrees is actually more light than 35000mcd at 15 degrees.

Re: 26Kmcd on Ebay, anyone try these? Comparison p

That, and you can run 2 of the 26K in the same space as the 10mm and for half the power.

Re: 26Kmcd on Ebay, anyone try these? Comparison p

Thanks for the pics and description, billsea - /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

KevinL - FWIW, I've disassembled mine without using heat/boiling to remove either the circuit board or potting compound. A little more elbow grease, maybe - but no biggie!

Hi Doug
This is off subject just a bit, but what would you consider
the best driver for 30 of those 26000mcd at 30ma?

Forgot again, 12v wired parallel.

Hey, Chuck, I never seem to be home when you call. Anyway, I see early in this thread that you have them all in parallel and your source is 12V. Given those constraints, PeterBs recommendation of a DB converter is a good one. My only comment is that with that many leds on the board, you really cannot get rid of enough heat to run them at 30mA each. I wouldn't go over 20mA each even if these are in a metal enclosure. That's my $0.02. BTW, the original HDS Action light ran 24 leds at 20mA each in a metal enclosure.

Re: 26Kmcd on Ebay, anyone try these? Comparison p

Hello All

I wonder if anyone has popped these into an Inova X5? I love the form factor of this torch but a little more light can only be a good thing...
Also- any Aussies tried the Oatley 20k version? 59 Aus cents each is really cheap!! Any ideas??

Re: 26Kmcd on Ebay, anyone try these? Comparison p

Thanks Doug
4- 123 Batts or 8AA?? PeterB recomended a sense resistor. I didn't see that one in the Digi-Key catalog. Perhaps I missed it.
BTW Looks like a possible new 100 footer and you wouldn't believe where it's at. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Recieved the LEDs today. No mods performed with them, yet. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thanks!

Re: 26Kmcd on Ebay, anyone try these? Comparison p

Hey all,
I have been playing with them ever since they landed. They are real shining stars. These are very focused LED making them very bright. The throw is very good a 3x LED is a good candidate for a Solitaire mod.

Although they are very bright, their lack of spill/flood when compared to Nichia makes me doubt very much. So this leads me to think that these Leds are better when grouped together than used in single. When grouped together, 3x Led throws a bright and white hotspot like an underdriven Luxeon with optics. Because of the narrow beam angle, these Leds will sit best in an enclosure without reflectors, for example the Inova X5 or the Peak 3LED AAA.

ICUDoc - I know Oatley has 20K but I got the 26K from ebay instead. It only takes less than a week for the package to arrive, I think it's worth it. The reason is because Oatley does not spec their LEDs very well on their webpage.

First, I want to thank CPF member billsea for very kindly sparing me some of his batch of these 26Kmcd LEDs -
without which I wouldn't be able to post this:

Yes, I'm doing the ultimate lazyman's way -
by simply taping the LED leads to 2x 2016 coin-cells /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: 26Kmcd on Ebay, anyone try these? Comparison p

I have filed two of them down for use in a mini mags.

With two Alkiline batteries the power draw is 5-7 mA and about half as bright as the ARC AAA when bounced on the cealing.

With the Kodak Oxi-Alkline Batteries it draws about 25 mA and is 2-3 times brighter then the ARC AAA.

With the Lithium AA's it draws about 30 mA and is a little brighter still.

It focuses to a small spot and even with the alklines it outthrows the ARC and the side spill is more usefull.

My bike light drives the 26 LEDs with about 40mA. But it has a metal housing with integrated cooling fins and the board has good contact to the housing. During riding it doesn't get hot at all but without wind it heats up of course (but not as bad as a L4).
For caving (=without wind) the 20mA, which Doug proposes, are probably the best (and most efficient) choice.

Hello Charles,

the sense resistors are used on the converter board to determine the current (the fomula for the DB is: 50mV=Rsense*I). You can find them also in Waynes Sandwich Shoppe (he has also a lot of explanations and a resistor calculator in on his homepage).
