2xAA usb cell phone charger question

I recently got the charger as in the pics set out below, i was wondering if NiMH (eneloop) cells or even 14500 li-ion cells could be used in the charger as well as alkaline cells, in fact, i was wondering if using li-ion 14500 cells would cause any harm to my cellphone.

It expects about 3v, and you'll be feeding it 8.4v - it's probably toast if you do it.

great! thanks for all the replies! have loads of eneloops to use in this charger, darn HTC dies pretty quickly with intensive (CPF) surfing.
