Edit: See 10/23 2:58 pm post re revised heading.

The Mag Charger NiCad battery is rated at 2.2 Ah and sells locally for around $30.00.

The same sized French-made NiCad battery for the Streamlight SL-20X is rated at 2.5 Ah and sells locally for around $42.00 (edit: and on line for about $36 plus shipping).

I have seen sites that sell individual NiCad 1/2 D cells rated at 2.8 AH and NiMHs at 3.8 Ah.

Does anyone know where I can get a NiCad or NiMH 5*1/2 D battery pack with these higher capacity cells?

AP brand's Ni-Cd1/2 D size cells are 2500 mah. So Ni-MH cells should be around 3500mah < ?

Dano:

Check this link for the 3800 mAh NiMH 1/2 D's. They even sell 80 Amp NiCad 1/2 D cells for use in battling robots. You'll have to drill down through their menus.

Their minimum order requirements are a little steep for me, unfortunately.

Wonder what are those battling robots you talk about. Why do they need 80 amps?

For those who wish to buy individual 2500 mAh fighting Robot 1/2 D NiCads with consumer positive button terninals, 80 @ are still available at $3.00 @ with minimum orders of 10 each at Powerstream. Call Mark at 801-764-9060.

Powerstream doesn't have any 1/2 D NiMH cells made, but they did have 100 @ 1/2 D 2500 mAh 80 Amp cells on the shelf they made for a cancelled fighting robot order. (Bushman and I bought 20 of them.) These remaining 80 separate cells each have commercial positive terminal buttons that may make for a tight fit in the Mag charger.

They are rated to run for 60 minutes at 2.0 Amps and 2.5 minutes at 10 Amps before the output drops below 1.2 V. I am really impressed about the lack of voltage drop. This should allow me to run the 6.0 V 3.35 A W/A 01111 bulb satisfactorily in the Mag Charger.

You can put 5 cells in a Mag Charger, a SL-35X, or a Mag 3D. You can charge them in your Mag Charger. $15 per flashlight for batteries that are considerably lower in voltage drop than the $30 2.2 Ah Mag Charger pack and, I would guess, the Streamlight $37 2.5 Ah battery.

I'ma bit confused...What's the capacity of these cells? Where does the 80 amp rating come in?

The 80 Amp rating means that they are designed for very high current drains with minimal voltage drop. (R/C batteries, by comparison are rated for 20 Amp drain and most NiCads and NiMHs are rated for 2 Amps to 3 Amps.) These batteries, in a 5 pack (or with 5 inserted into your flashlight unpacked)will deliver more than 6.0 volts for 80% of their capacity with a 2 Amp drain.

The capacity is the same 2500 mAh as the Streamlight pack that sells for $37 online.

The Mag Charger pack has only 2200 mAh capacity.

Don't every try and short circuit em okay?

Nerd:

How much wattage do you need to weld? These batteries might be good for spot welding.

Say I connect 10 of em together and use a super thin wire to short em.... hmm....

I tried a short-circuit test to see how many amps I could
draw from a 10 cell, 12 volt pack. I got 200 amps, and
the voltage dropped to 1.3 volts (i.e. 0.13 volts per cell).
I also got a lot of complaints about the smoke and smell,
as the shrink wrap. At this current each of the nickel
strips connecting the cells were dissipating 80 watts,
or 640 watts total.

BTW, this was not just for the fun of it, one of our customers
was planning to drive a superconducting magnet with
these cells, and wanted to know if he had to put a
current limiting resistor in.

Best regards

I meant to say "as the shrink wrap reverted to its
constituant elements"

By the way, we stock the robot cell 10 packs, which
are flat topped, as well as the consumer style
bump tops (50 left of those). We would be wiling
to disassemble a pack if someone wanted to
buy some of the flat top cells.

Our $200 minimum order for cells isn't because we are arrogant
but because we make all our cells to order and it
is hard on the factory to set up to make a few cells.
If we have them in stock we are glad to sell
smaller quantities.

Best regards
mark

Mark:

I happened to notice that Powerstream offers 10,000 mAh 50 Amp rated 3/2 D NiMH cells. You wouldn't happen to have any of them on the shelf would you? If so, I'd love to buy at least 12 of them.

Unfortunately, the > $1,000 price of a 100 unit minimum build lot is beyond my needs and means.

Hey,

1/2 D cells? I can see a 3 D cell flashlight, using 6 of these, at 7.2 volts. Add a little resistance, and mount a 5 watt LS. Rechargable, too! Nice.

Gotta' get me some!
