3 (somewhat) quick questions about McR-XR reflectors

okay guys, im getting ready to pull the trigger and get all of the stuff i need to build my bike light, but I've a few questions so i make sure i get the right stuff (duh ). background: light will be 2x cree R2 driven at 350mA and 1A using bflex.

1. I'm planning on using a pair of McR XR19 reflectors for my headlight, but I'm concerned that i might end up with too intense of a spot, especially since I'm going to try and run them at 1A for the fast stuff, so I'd like a decent beam at that power. Is there another reflector that might be better for this application (being of similar size)?

2. Are the centering rings necessary for proper beam? they'll be going into a CNC head so the reflector can't move, but I'm worried about the LED not being centered. Also, slightly related, how does the extra thickness of the centering ring effect the beam?

3. Would it be possible to get dimensions and tolerances for the centering rings if i need them? I have a full shop at my disposal, and I'd rather crank a few rings off the lathe than pay for the ones from the sales thread on here. i know, its cheap, but I'm a poor starving college student and buying the rings makes my light head a good $15 more expensive (thats 2 good meals!)

Thanks for any help,
Cheers,
-Bryan

personally I have not found any difference between the XR and the normal 19 mm reflector.
Use the normal one, because it has more material at the end (I glue my reflis in place)

when placed onto the Cree metal ring, both have the perfect height, they only have to be centered (can be moved around on the metal ring, there is no kind of "fitting" like the smaller XR reflectors have).

imho the best refli for Cree and giving a nice small to medium beam with great spill also.
If I had to evaluate, I d guess: about 8 degrees

The McR19XR and McR19 are two very diffrent reflectors.
As the XR one has a bigger hole so the Reflector seats down on the Cree allowing a perfect Focus. Both due to the bigger hole and meat taken off at the bottom.

The McR19 has a tighter hole and has a little more meat on the bottom.
And is ment for Luxeons.

I can not do anything other than quote myself:

have done beamshots and a bit of homegrewn testing --> no difference
(when I get home, I will check, as I have some of both in my "materials" box , but I do not remember, that size of holes or whatever is different. At the outside/back the XR has material removed, but imho not from the back. Beams were totally identical)

maybe I ll post that multipic-shot when I have acces to my data at home - if anyone wants that (its a multipic of several optics/Reflis on a cree and with some distances from a wall --> to show how beam widens)

For a headlamp, I would recommend an McR-20 Seoul instead of the McR-19 XR. The reflector fits perfectly on a Cree XR-E and there's no modding required.

I use this combo in a BD Zenix IQ mod, and the beam is very nice - lots of spill, and a very well-defined but not too bright hotspot.

thanks for the replies guys

yellow, I'd love to see that multipic if you could upload it.

tmorita, do you happen to have the beam shots for the 19XR and 20seoul? I'd like to see the difference.

unfortunately I have yet not made a series with the McR 20 mm reflector I have here (didnt even remember ordering)

thanks a bunch for that yellow. I think I'll stick with the XR19 as originally planned. looks like a good combination of smooth spot and spill for my needs.

now my last question, do i need the centering rings? if so, does anybody know where i might be able to get a schematic so i can machine them out myself?

cheers
