Seems like such an obvious device.

Anyone know of any such beast ?

(To use CR123 in a 3AAA torch, not the other way round !!)

It would likely have to be custom made. Nowadays, a single CR123A can cost more at the big-box hardware stores than one of those inexpensive 3AAA flashlights so there wouldn't be a huge demand for this adapter from your average consumer.
You could coble one together with a brass spacer and some rubber hose or you could go with a 18500 li-ion rechargeable instead.

Here's a replacement li-ion rechargeable for 3AAA. It's a protected 1300mAh battery with charger built-in.

Just plug the USB power cable to charge.

It takes about 4 hours to be full charged.

How does it fit in a flashlight? The 3AAA carrier isn't standardized and vary from model to model.

The dimension of this Li-ion replacement is about 22.5x59.5mm. I don't have many 3AAA flashlights, but it fits well in my two flashlights.

The drawback is it'll produce large current if used in a direct drive 3AAA flashlight.

That is a counterintuitive idea -- it really took me awhile to wrap my mind around it. (I just went back yet again, and re-read the OP)

From a preparedness point of view I'd say that anything that allows one to use primaries in unintended ways can certainly have utility. I could tell you more -- but then you'd have to kill me.

Waiting for a mate to machine up several of these. Some 3AAA devices can actually hold an 18650 - none of mine will though.

Sadly the mate just just moved a long way away and hasn't yet got his lathe moved.
