40 minute run expected on a P61 in a 9P + 2 @ A19\'s + 4@ 2000 mAh 4/5 A NiMHs
In another thread I discuss how my 9P + A19 with 2@ 4/5 A NiMHs and 1 @ A NiMh are able to drive a KL3 more brightly than a 500 mA ARC LSS Hybrid for 1 1/2 hours before dimming down to ARC brightness.
Snake raised the issue of adding a second A19. This configuration would accomodate either 5 @ CR123's with a length of 170 mm = 34 mm * 5 or 4 @ 4/5 A 2000 mAh NiMHs with a length of 172 mm = 43 mm * 4. The springs on the SF LA's are capable of accomodating the extra 2 mm.
I like this concept much more than than I liked my dimmer, lower battery capacity 8X that I sold to a CPFer who only wanted it for a planned 5W LS mod.
I currently have only 1 A19, but I will order another. A B65 will run a P61 for only around 8 to 10 minutes, so why bother? For the cost of another A19 I can run my P61 for extended times very cheaply.
This configuration would have a nominal capacity = 76% of a 3 cell SF. (9.6 nominal Watt hours vs. 12.6 nominal watt hours) (9.6 Watt hours = 2000 mAh * 1.2 V * 4 cells. 3 @ SF CR123's have a nominal capacity of 12.6 Watt hours = 1400 mAh * 3.0 V * 3 cells)
That preceding paragraph suggests that the 4 * 4/5 A configuration should also drive a KL3 brightly for more than 5 hours since 3 @ CR123's will drive it for > 7 hours. The fourth cell would ensure that the delivered voltage wouldn't drop below the LS' forward voltage well before the batteries' capacity is depleted.
This will probably be workable only for those who have sophisticated R/C chargers and are willing to jerry-rig gang charging fixtures. Sorry, Allan.
(Allan, like most sane people, insists on keep-it-simple all inclusive chargers. I particularly enjoyed his rant on the topic a few months ago.
