Not sure if this belongs here, but I'm watching How it's Made right now. They just said the light at the top of the Luxor Hotel in Las Vegas is 42 Billion candlepower and that airplanes can see it 250 miles away. Wow.

And it runs all night on 2 CR123's.

Aparently, what happens in Vegas, can be seen 250 miles away. I saw that on there too. I hate to see their electric bill!

$53 an hour it says so thats like 40k a month and nearly half a million a year , better get some rechargables :grin2:

I remember reading somewhere that it used to be even brighter, but the Luxor had to de-tune it because of to many complaints to the FAA.

IIRC it was at one time 47 light fixtures focused in unison, Now it's 37 or 39 fixtures, or something like that.

Are you sure you saw it on "How It's Made" ? ? ?

That's on Discovery Channel.

Because the History Channel just had that tonight (Thursday night)

on "Modern Marvels" (the World's Strongest, part 3)

Hmmmm . . . .

BTW, there was no actual image of the Luxor Light.
Only a "text screen" of information about it, before the Commercial break.

Gee, i'll bet they could do an entire HOUR on that light.

:twothumbs

Inquiring minds wanna' know !

You're right about it only being a text screen (and a manly voice) that came on. Now that you mention it, maybe it was Modern Marvels, but I had been watching a How it's Made episode on mountain bikes. Maybe the program ended and a new one started...or I switched the channel...I have to stop drinking so much green tea at night. :p

I went to Vegas last year ,when I read about the light I had to stay there,it was really cool hotel and the light can be seen from any where on the strip ,and way beyond.
Made it easy to find my way back to the hotel:twothumbs. Its hard to get lost with that beacon shining. It was very bright.

The original Surefire design was scrapped due to the alarming number of CR123's it was going to take to power it...

For my first ever trip to Vegas, we stayed in the Luxor. The elevators are weird, as they move at an angle rather than up and down. I'd like to sneak into the parking lot with one of my VSS-3A tanklights, (Wicho's post above) and have someone a good distance away snap a pic. :D (Yeah, I'll lose, but will be there! :D )
