$55.00 gets you no heat issues, and it's much brighter.

Has anyone compared the 2 (ideally with a some sort of 'lightbox') to give an idea of how much brighter?

I know '240 lumens' is often used with the Malkoff, and 'up to 150' with the 6EX, but these are theoretical emitter lumens.

I just ordered one of these drop-ins from Ebay only to find out later that it was the CREE version... They both have the same model number as far as I can tell. Just letting everyone know so they don't make the same mistake I did...

I'll vouch for Malkoff he is the Tops as well as his products. They are not cheap but they are also each hand built and his standards are very high.
I had my seoul drop in lit up for 2 hrs straight and it was not even warm. Great light, plus 6 hrs runtime on 3 D batteries

All in all, it's a great upgrade. I run mine in a 2D Mag using 6 AA (Energizer) Lithium batteries (6AA -> 2D holder, from Litemania) and UCL glass lens. I suppose in effect, mine is similar to running the drop-in a 6D Mag with the lesser weight and shorter length of the 2D Mag, plus the lighter Lithium batteries!! :twothumbs

I have some dumb questions: since it is a 3-6 cell device, what's the advantage of running it with six cells? Wouldn't it do just as well with three for half the cost? Or is it brighter with more cells?

OK, now I am confused - these general problem with drop-ins for Mags is heatsinking - getting the heat generated away from the LED. The Malkoff drop-in addresses this with a large copper heatsink that fits against the inside of the light body - and so should make it warm?
Unless the heatsink spreads the heat out so much that there is little overall temp. increase in the body?

I assumed that if the light body was warm (for high output LAs) then this indicated that the heatsinking was good?

Now, with the Terralux 6EX, there is no direct heat transfer path, just the small screw on part, which acts as a heatsink, and as such I would not expect the light body to get warm. As a result the 6EX runs at lower power than the Malkoff.

Yours
A bit confused :grin2:

I just got my Malkoff the other day and the head of the light does get slightly warm after being left on for 15 or 20 minutes with no loss in (AWESOME) output.

How many cells are you running it on?

I'm running 4 Cs and it is AWESOME!

For the record, I really feel that Gene is charging a fair price for something that the average user can install in less than five minutes (a bit more to cut the reflector), will be crazy bright with no drop in performance in a D cell Mag for many hours. In my book that's a good deal! Now, I light up my 3D MagLED and it amazes me that I was impressed by it when I first bought it! Gene's drop-in is probably 4 times brighter and it doesn't dim after warming up.

I have a Surefire 6P with a DX CREE drop-in which is very impressive...but I can burn a hole right through the center of the hot spot with the Malkoff Device!

I like it (LOVE IT!) enough that I ordered another one last night!:D

Other than what the man’s already said, smaller size and same brightness, using 6AA lithium’s will pretty much insure peak output from the drop-in. I’m guessing he’ll get great runtime as well from those same batteries; better then what the host was originally intended for (2D alkalines) and comparable to 4 or 5 D cells. Again, all in a 2D form factor. Not bad IMHO.

I see, that makes sense. I figured that since LEDs can only take so much, it will just buck the extra voltage down to an acceptable level so it would be the same whether it uses 4 cells or 6. But yeah, with six cells it will probably keep running at full power until the cells are completely drained, whereas it would probably get dimmer and dimmer with only three.

Thanks!

I've got an old mag 4D with a serial number that doesn't start with a D. I hear these are different than the newer models that have a serial number starting with D. Gene said his mod won't work with these old models if I read correctly. Do the TerraLux drop in's fit these older models ?

... I do have to wonder about spending $80 on a $18 light.

Long run times at high output in a form factor you can bash a pitbull's head with if need be.

There's a CREE version? Anyone have a link? That would be perfect to use as a drop in for a Aspheric Mag setup. I haven't been able to find any CREE drop ins; only Seoul's.

Just received and dropped-in the TLE-6EX MiniStar5 TreraLux in my old 4D (that does not have a D in the serial number) and it works perfectly [i.e. no problems whatsoever (except I now have to be careful turning it on outside - otherwise the neighbors may think the end is near).]

I ordered a TerraLUX TLE-6EXB MiniStar5, and it throws far, about 600 feet far, It is really worth it, it revives the good Maglite you've had laying around for a few years...

I've had one for a month or two now. Your assessment is spot on. This is what the MagLED should have been all on its own. The difference is difficult to explain, it's so much better with the TerraLux upgrade.

If someone is on the fence about getting one, no worries mate. It's well worth the money spent.[/QUOTE

]how about a white wall beamshot? I'm curious about color and artifacts.

Oops - didn't notice how old this thread was before I posted.

I have the Terralux 3 - 6 D drop in....its supposed to be a 1000 lumens....?????

i think not....

I have MANY <1000 lumen lights (actual 1000 lumens) and this drop in comes no where close to them AT ALL. Maybe 250 lumens at most...

still, it brought my 6D maglite back to life!

250 is not bad, it'll keep heat manageable for extended use and make for a nice general purpose light.

I have this drop in. It is not 1000 lumens. 650/700 at the most. I do not like it because it is all just very short range flood. Badly done flood I might add. If you want a high output drop in for the big Mags go Malkoff or if you want even higher output go custom.
