I can understand your excitement in the light. It is worth the wait.

As a side note the new Dorcy 3AAA light I've seen at the Target store looks like it has the same reflector as the ALX. I think I'll have to go to Target and get a Dorcy to really look at the reflector.

Another deep dish reflector is the Nuwai ALX-816A that GOLDEN GADGETS sell. It is a bigger 6AAA batteries in a 3-volt, parallel batteries, set up. Golden Gadgets sell the light at Ebaby for $29.99. The 816A stock emitter is a 1-watt Luxeon with a whiter emitter than the original ALX-1113A had. But the 816A emitter is still a problem. While the emitter center is white the ring around the beam is pucky green. I'm going to swap out the 1-watt emitter for a decent 3-watt emitter since that would be easy. If the light looks decent I'll stop there since the electronic regulator in the 816A works very well. But if the emitter is not bright enough I'll consider modding the light to direct drive.

4sevens, have you thought about modding the 816A? I suspect with the exception of more AAA batteries in it the light is the same as the 1113A.

Looks like a Star Wars light saber!

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

Geez, you are right. It IS a light saber! An average light saber but we can change that! Before I take it down again I'm going to do some light reading numbers and make a couple of beam shots.

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

The 1W dorcy has a smaller reflector. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I took picts of it next to
the alx but will have to dig to find them and them upload.... will do
that later...

For now, a quick update... I attempted to lathe my own heat sinks
but the material was too tough to deal with... mess up the cutting
tools. But here are some picts...
(right - uncut steel alloy, left - my poor attempt)

So instead I went to the bank and got these...
(I'm gonna pull these picts once the mod is done /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif )

I'm going to polish down on side of it for the emitter /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here are some more teaser pictures... of lots of beheaded ALX's

don't worry coach - those that send in their own hosts are marked and put in their own special envelope /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

Would 'pizza' or 'car wash' coins work for an emitter heat sink?

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

I'm glad I stumbled across this thread about the ALX-1113a. I didn't know about the puke green light... I would expect that any advertised 1w Luxeon LED would be the same: white, strong output, etc. How can it have much less output than other standard lights.

This is just a guess. Maybe a bad bin of lights that were sold and bought cheap then installed in the lights to keep the lights cheap enough for the public to buy. I'm sure the general public thinks the 1113A is a bright and white light. In fact I have a friend on the other side of the US that thought his 1113A was bright and white. I had to tell him it wasn't. As he looked harder he saw the emitter was spewing out puke green radiation.

New technology of better tint 3-watt emitters made the 1-watt that we used to call white look green. We have learned over time that the green we thought was white is really puke green. We have been spoiled with whiter emitters.

The brightness might be effected by the limited amount of current that is able to go through the 1-watt emitter.

It is all just a guess from me.

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

Nice work 4sevens! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/happy14.gif I am still enjoying my light. I have purchased some goods and will be modding away soon enough myself.

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

Coach - I've drilled all the susans and are mounting the emitters
tonight. All 23!! I had to rig something to align them PERFECTLY.

Nitroz bought my personal ALX locally /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif It has some small dings, but
it was my first ALX mod ever /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll try to post picts tonight. Won't promise since parents and
grandparents are coming tonight.

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

Dude, I think you've over-illuminated that coke can. No one can miss it now. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Way cool! Can't wait to get my light. - Tony

Re: Little Nuwai ALX-1113A out throws big ProMagnu

Tonight I'm working on modifying the switches with the circuit board.
cutting traces to isolate the circuit (it'll be fully detached)
and installing the 10 ohm resistor. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

UPDATE with pictures.

23 susans drilled with 46 holes, each de-burred (92 holes)
And each emitter suface buffed
whew...

today I finished mounting the emitters...
