Here is a list of battery sizes.

A D-cell is 61.5 mm long (so 3 x 61.5 = 185 mm) and a IMR26500 is 50 mm long (4 x 50 = 200 mm).

yes i have done some calculations, but my question was more about AW IMR 26500. is it a true 26500?

26.1 mm diameter x 50 mm long, by my measurement (carbon fiber digital caliper, reasonably accurate but not top quality)

3 of these should fit. http://www.batteryspace.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=5161 # would equal 195 mm. I don't think the extra 5 mm is going to cause any problems.
