5 watt Luxeon Star Testing, Runtimes, Brightness, ETC.

9 volts battery under this kind of load would drop to 7.2 volts? Maybe less....

I must say .... The nine volt battery has me looking for a suitable container for the whole setup. An 8 minute runtime is fine by me. I was looking at some good old fashioned lighters, but they are to thin as a holder. I definately want this...It would be with me at all times with no hassle, and boocoo light to boot.

Here are some rechargable contenders for longer runtimes.

A 9.6 volt makita - Fair runtime. No bigger than a 3 Dcell
The 3.6 volt versa pack....two of these would be somewhat long, and a little fatter than the 2AA mag
The dremel 7.2 volt. This one is tempting to chuck the motor in the dremel. Theres a two speed switch on it, and a button on it for the chuck that could serve as a temporary on off. This one won't roll when you set it down, and will stand straight up. I can see it now (Saying I don't go knowhere without my dremel)

I just want to say Thanks for sharing this with us.

As usual, your efforts assist others in building the flashlights they want without enduring the hit-or-miss approach..

Hm.

Versa-pack Double-barrel? Anyone know if we can buy a few of the connectors the batteries plug into?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Yeah, got me thinking about it too! Small, fits in pocket or on belt if a clip is made. 120 lumens! Sounds pretty neat. How about 2 9 volts in parallel. Double the battery life. You wouldn't use it for long term anyway. Maybe a low beam setting (still pretty bright), and a Direct drive.

How about a Radio Shack project box? The make them to hold 9V batteries, I seem to recall?

I'm not actvely looking for a metal box for a 9 volt' but the corner of my eye is looking. If I find something cool I'll let ya know. That Radio Shack box .... Whats it made of ? size? rounded corners? Does it have a top?

Two 9Vs is good, but this is all about small.
It's damn near key ring size.
Can ya hook that 5 watt baby you got to a 9V to see what it can do? Maybe the batt can't keep up.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I have a 5 watt on a small heat sink, and wired. I went looking for the 9 volt that was on the counter, and it's gone! Bother!

Small is right, but it must have enough aluminum to cool that thing. I am thinking of epoxying a aluminum plate onto the plastic. Seems to work for other projects I've done. Anyway, let's see how small we can make it!

I also have a few '4 N cell battery holders.' I'd like to try and do something with them too. Combine them and only put in 6 batteries? It's be about the size of a 'D' cell battery, maybe a little bigger.

Ah, you pikers. You want the worlds coolest 5-watt Luxeon flashlight?

size: 9v
Dimensions: 1.0x1.9x0.675
Voltage: 9V (at zero current)
mah: 595 (at very small currents)
Runtime: A few minutes at best.

Cool Size
Dimensions: 1.4x2.1x0.75 inches
Voltage: 7.2V
mah: 1000
Runtime: 1 hour

How much does this magical power source cost?
How about $35?

And what is it? How about two of the batteries out of my Motorola V-120 Cell phone. (I'd post pictures but my digicam is at Lake Powell. Sigh. It sucks when your toys have more fun than you do.)
Try:

Hell, you can even get the flashy blinky version
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1382914421

The Star/O is about 1" on a side, the Star is about 0.8". Both are larger than the thickness of two cells. I envision a rectangular flashlight about the size of two Tic-Tac boxes placed face-to-face, with a 1-hour runtime. How's that for cool?

Too much work for you? How about this: A Sony NP-F330 battery pack from a Sony Camcorder. 7.2V, 5.0 WH, almost the same size package, $15 on Ebay. Figure out a mechanical mount that engages the ears on the battery, and the user could swap in a battery all the way up to an NP-F960 (38 WH, 7 hours runtime), depending on their needs.
Yeah, the 5-watt Luxeon is gonna be cool.
