5-Watt "Terra Destroyer"

A couple of questions.

Just to get things straight, not having a collimator would make the light more of a spot, right?

What focal length would be needed between the LED and the collimator? What I'm asking is if a "flip off" collimator lens, like a tip-off filter, allow for a spot/flood switch at the flick of a thumb?

When will the white be available? How much? What kind of conversions will we be seeing, or will specific lights be produced around the LED?
 
Hi, Craig, Did this melt the Meterman? What does it say at, let's say 2 feet (multiply it by 4) on the FC scale? That is a scary light!

I would let a dead halibut and a bag of imitation crab parts rot in my sink & toilet for a month if it meant I could KEEP this flashlight!

Thanks for the quick response. What might your speculation be, if someone were to design a colliminator capable of focus similiar to the 1W's. Do you think that the "throw" could actually be a contender for the incandescents? Or do you see it as maybe a more powerful, further reaching "flood" type of light?

Better find an expert for this one.

Good Lord!! Hey uh.. Wayne, (or Craig), could a retrofit like this ever work in an E2e?? Or would I need an EDC flashlight oven mitt??

1. What kind of heat-output is this thing making?
2. What's Future-E's price-tag for 5w LS's? I haven't gotten a response from my email (I'll probably call tomorrow).

1: I'll run a set of batteries through it. But I want to get it run through the beam profile analyzer first, and it's going to take awhile to set that instrument up.

Note that I do not own or have access to a thermocouple, laser-guided thermometer, or any other instrument capable of measuring this. Best I can do is guess the temperature by using my fingers.

2: I've heard projected pricing on 5W emitters with hexagonal MCPCB ranging from $35 to $45 apiece.
 
Imagine the side emitter version, placed in an e2 and using its reflector!

Light has been running continuously for approximately 25 minutes now.
Case temperature is approximately 132°F at the bezel, and 106°F near the tailpiece. I'm using my fingers as a "thermometer", as I do not have anything that can accurately measure this, so the higher reading could be off by +-5°F or so. The lower reading (at the tailpiece) should be accurate to a degree or two maximum.

Unit has been lying on its side on the plate of an all-metal tripod, left exactly as I placed it for its beam profile analysis.

Intensity figures probably read on the low side, becase of the wider-than-usual beam in this light. Wider beams always give lower numbers.
 
The unit is now becoming uncomfortable to hold.
Mid-body temperature is somewhere in the 120's, and head temperature is probably approaching 140°F; but seems to be leveling off now.

If I pick up the light by the bezel using a moderately firm grip, I can only hang onto it for 3-4 seconds before being forced to drop it. It's not scalding, but it has exceeded typical human tolerance levels. Using a light grip on the bezel (just enough to keep it from falling) I cannot hang onto it for more than 6-7 seconds. At mid-body, it becomes rather uncomfortable at 10-20 seconds (so I have to juggle it and reposition my fingers); and I can still hold it by the tailcap for an unlimited period.

I just now turned it off (10:53pm) to let it cool.
