I have been using a Katokichi 5 watt Luxeon module for some months now, and have been very impressed with its performance in the KT4 Turbohead. Having read previous reviews of the various different Turboheads available, i knew i just *had* to see how these 5 watt modules would perform in the various different incarnations of the Turbohead.
After many months of searching, i finally have a sample of each of the following; KT4 2.5" , T4 3" and the SRTH 2.5" compact turbohead.

I also included a stock KL6, as its currently Surefire's 5 watt range-topper.

Down to the nitty gritty...first up is the KL6

The KL6 looks the weakest in this test, but truth be told, it offers the best photon management if you are looking for a close-medium range light. Whilst the Luxeon Turboheads give a very intense spot, they do so at the expense of weaker spill. The KL6 has a very smooth transition from hotspot to corona (my pictures dont reflect this i know, but thats down to my lack of the ability to take good beamshots).
However, if you want a "reach out and touch someone) LED, these Turbohead modules are the way to go. Heat is an issue thats been bought up before, and to be honest, i cant say for certain that it isnt. I've been told that it should be ok, but i havent put enough milage on these to be certain yet. My oldest one is a few months old with approx. 30 hours on it, and it hasnt shown any drop in Lux yet. Heat is definately less of an issue with the older T heads, as they dont have the shock isolation of the KT4, providing a direct thermal path to the outside world.

i am so tired if you teasing me with those darn kick *** 5W Turbos. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Awesome though kakster, simply Awesome.

I want a SRTH /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Uh Kak,

Is the SRTH the one that comes with the 12PM? Uh... it scored higher on the lux meter than a 3" TH? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

I shouldn't have sold it if that's the case..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mecry.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif Wow! Great post and photos, Kakster.

Nerdy: yup, the SRTH from the 12PM outperforms the 3" T4. If it's any consolation, you cant really see the difference with the naked eye.

MTFD17: The luxeons are heatsinked by the metal post it sits on. This passes the heat into the reflector. Its not the best solution, but its worked so far.

I'll try and get some outdoor shots tomorrow, but living in an urban enviroment, its gonna be hard to find a decent location.

could you remind us of how the Luxeon is powered in that pedestal/module again? Regulated? Resistored? How much current? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/popcorn.gif
Thanks!

Thanks, I remembered it was somewhere around there... BTW, most excellent shootout!!

I've been drooling on these pictures so long, I wet my keyboard, shorted my laptop and got electrocuted on my tongue. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drool.gif

One more question Kakster... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Are these modules entire custom aluminum pieces that he cut and anodized black, or are these regular Millenium LAs that were modified?
I remember on his website he had pics of his own module, bare Aluminum, but I just had to say these look very nice and identical to Surefire LAs if they are indeed custom cut modules... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif

great idea HunterSon! One 5W and one 3W module... sounds great. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

great post! and if those modules are sold ... I am in!

I knew they worked and I knew they perform but what I didn't know was how impressive these little modules are. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif for these shots. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I need one of these, too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Klaus.
