I think you're spot-on in your assessment.
Wonder when white LEDs started emitting "large quantities" of UV and IR?
Wonder why he used NSPW515BS (frosted lens) LEDs in the middle. They're worthless in this application with all those 20° and 50°clear lens versions surrounding it. They should have never ended up in this flashlight. They should be replaced with NSPW510BS (50°, clear lens) if he wants to do a mixture.
Filter caps on a 100% battery powerered application?
Sound more like connector problems to me.
