I am wondering if you have plans for any converter boards that will be able to be 5w sandwiches. Do you have any converter boards capable of powering a 5w? The badboy 700 and 750 are not in stock? Will they be? I guess I am looking for anything you have to power a 5w and what its mA are.
Thanks,
Jason

The 5 watters really need to be attatched directly onto a metal heatsink. A sandwhich would never be able to take the heat.

You will want at least a BB750 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Wayne has DownBoys comming soon that will go up to 1.5 amps !!!
Those would be great for 5W's.

Just for reference - I swapped the 1W'er with a 5W'er on a BB500 sandwich in a 2AA minimag and so far it's been OK. It does get very very warm (not too hot to touch). I've run it for 30 minutes once and most often for 5 minutes or less. It's obviously underdriving the 5W'er to about 3.3W with a U2T. (not the greatest 5'wer around) You need more voltage than the 2AA would provide if you go with a BB700/750 and even if you could provide the voltage I wouldn't put it in a minimag - way too hot I'm guessing.

I'd be careful if you're thinking of stuffing a downboy 1.5 and a 5 watter in a regular McLux head. My 5 watt/BB750 runs very hot indeed, i wouldnt want to try doubling that heat. If the downboys have thermal protection like the badboys do, i think you would get maybe 2 minutes runtime before it shut itself off.

Yeah, but for those two minutes it would be awesome!

I was going to build a direct drive 5w with my 3x123 mclux parts, but now I'm going to use a downboy, though you're right, 1500ma is probably way too much. I'll probably end up using something more sane, like 800ma or so.

sflate, Can you tell a significant difference in the output (from 1w to 5w)?

I wouldn't call the difference significant and in all honesty it's probably not worth the cost, extra heat, and loss of runtime (although I don't really know what the full runtime is since I've only had it running for 30 minutes before recharging). It IS brighter than my 1W BB750 R2H and my MM+ (800ma) w/R2H but I wouldn't say it was a whole lot brigher. Certainly no where near, say, my 5W Megaclops in a 2D maglite w/ 6AA NiMh. It IS a great WOW light!! People can't believe that much light is coming out of a well known minimag. The beam is probably near that of a 1W LD pattern w/ NX05. (Very nice evenly spread beam with a lot of spill. Not too narrow not too wide. I like it a lot but wouldn't carry it as a sole EDC.

Slick told me he haas a mclux 5W Direct Drive 3x123 light, and it runs fine.
After about 20 minutes of intermediate running, you can leave it on continuously. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

tyler, I am planning the Exact same thing lol.. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Put dont know what mA DB to use yet.

Behold, the 5W sammich /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Now, the comparable mod using other host:
My LX mod: (still compared to MM btw)

Notice the difference in brightness between the 5W sammich and the 5W LX. That is because the sammich was only supplied with 2AA while the LX got 2 123 battery. There is also optic issue, but that is not the primary cause.

There are lots of problem with this set up, like heat issue, runtime, etc. Btw, this thing fall out of regulation from the start, as there is not enough voltage to supply the required power to the sammich.
In conclusion, i think 5W sammich is not all that worth it. Lots of issues for the modder to handle and simply, not worth the result IMHO. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

shiftd, Which BB are you using? If it's anything higher than the BB500 you will not be able to run it in regulation with 2AA batteries.

It was BB750 :grinn:
yep, it never goes in full regulation in 2AA set
