I got a beauty of a S&W 9mm Tactical for my 50th Birthday. The gun comes with a rail for a light mount. I never thought of a light for mounting on this till now. I have a SF e2, Scorpion, UBH (on the way. Any of these lights made for this or are there only certain types of lights for the mounts? I always thought of using a light in a tactical stance separate from the gun body. Any info is greatly appreciated as I want to see the fit in certain holsters. I'll probably end up sending this to S&W for removal of the light rail. But who knows I might like the light mounted? I suspect the cost of a mount for a light to be high. Or at least cut into my light buying money.

i'm not familiar with guns but you could try streamlight's M3 light....the beam is supposedly not as good as surefire's but what do i know

Saying you have a S&W 9mm Tactical is not very descriptive. Its like saying you have a pocket knife. What is the model? Is it a Sigma, SW99, or a 3rd gen gun (39xx, 59xx, etc.), 'cuz they all can have light rails and Tactical in the model name...

FWIW, I personally think you pay an extra $75 for nothing. Unless you are SWAT, you aren't going to use the rail unless it only sits in your dresser drawer and doesn't get carried.

Surefire has a line of weapon-mounted lights -- you won't be mounting your E2, you'll be buying a a light and assembly that's meant to be weapons-mounted. Surefire also has a number of different switch options for your weapon-mounted light.

The one thing I would suggest is that you give your light and firearm system a few seconds of thought -- and please forgive me if you've already thought this out completely. Do your really want your light to be mounted to your firearm? For many people, the right answer to that question is "yes". For me, I came to the conclusion that the answer is definitely "no". I don't want my gun necessarily pointing in whatever direction my flashlight is pointed, especially if that bump in the night was just my 3-year-old wandering down the hall to find the cat.

Anyway, you get the point -- there are sound reasons to go with a gun-mounted light, and there are sound reasons for going with a handheld light instead. If you don't know the advantages of each system, it's worth starting the conversation there, and perhaps duplicating the question on 186thousand.com to get more perspective.

Gun Nut It's a 3913TSW. All the 9mm tacticals have the same rail per S&W support.
This gift is a beautiful thing. I looked on S&W site and there are models without the rail. I was turned onto the 9mm when I fired Cuz's. His didn't have the rail. I enjoyed firing his so much he got me one. Great Guy!!!
I just spoke with S&W support and it'll cost me ~ $30 to have it removed. Yikes!
Joe T Yeah as I said mounting a light was not even in my thoughts till I received this. I'd use my TL or other lightstunner first. Since the rail is there I figured I'd see what lights it took.
SF doesn't list a mount for S&W.
Seems that insight Technologies is the only source for this light (again from S&W) and for ~$150 for the M5 it'll be a long time till I try this.

Enjoy the new year everyone!!

I like having a light attached to a home defense handgun. I also agree that you don't want to investigate every noise using your handgun light. The 3913TSW is a nice gun for concealed carry. Full power, good control, slim profile. It can do double duty as a home defense gun and could use a Streamlight/ITI M5 light, as you mentioned. In that role, I'd also add night sights. I'd suggest seeing if your local range has an M-5 you could try out or rent for an hour. I think you might find that it is indeed worth the investment. GG&G has been coming out with some new adapters lately. It might be possible to get an adapter for your gun that has a picatinny rail. Then you might be able to attach a surefire nitrolon weapons light. Also, some people at the range I visit have used 1" scope rings attached to the rails and 6P's on their handguns, with pressure activated switches. A shock isolated bezel helps preserve the LA's. There are also other small devices to attach 6p's to the rails, and some to attach to the magazine floorplate. Your local range can probably fill you in in more detail.
JMO...YMMV

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">The 3913 is certainly a nice weapon. I had a 3913NL for about 3 years a while back before I sold it.

That was when I was introduced to the 1911 .45! You can get one in a little smaller, lighter and thinner package a la Colt Defender, Springfield Micro-Compact, Kimber Ultra Compact, etc. I am now a die hard single action cocked and locked guy, and that combined with 8 rounds of .45 is my favorite kind of carry package.

Enjoy it!
