Hi, my partner looks after horses and wants a light she can hold in her mouth while she looks at her horses feet in the dark.
I bought her a H30 zebralight for her head, but she wants something with a little more of a spot, and while she wears the headlamp for general night paddock duty, for investigating hooves, she doesn't like it.
It doesnt need to be uber bright, but at an arms length the bright part of the beam should be at least the size of a dinnerplate.
I have seen lights with rubberized/plastic covers over the body, and these would probably be ideal if small. I have an ex10 and that is perfect except for the hard metal cover which is rough on her teeth and bad if she gets a knock.
Any ideas that don't involve crass comments on what my partner can put in her mouth would be appreciated?

Touching horses hooves (which are caked in feces and urine from standing in it all day), handling a light, then holding that light in your mouth...

:barf:

Does she not like the headlamp she uses just because it's a headlamp, or because it's probably a cheap crappy one? A higher quality headlamp with the type of desired beam pattern would probably be a better option.

Kinda the same reason most people I know think LED's are uselessly dim and blue, and are only good for long runtime, because that's the only junk they have ever seen or bought in a store, not knowing how much better you can get.

But if she insists on sucking on horse sh!t, you can wrap any light in a little grip tape or slide a silicon tube over it to be more bite friendly.

I bought a Rayovac Sportsman Extreme 1 AA headlight at Target when I was in the States last year. It has 4 LEDs, a white, 2 red and a blue. The white has a good hotspot with throw but it also has a diffuser that can slide over it for flood. I find it a pain to cylce through the colours but it is not too expensive (around $20.00), uses a common cell, is light weight and is available in stores (hopefully). It might be good enough for her needs.

EDIT: Just saw where you live so my advice may not be pertinent.

I agree with Marduke!

I keep an old led headlamp in my tack box. I love my horse, but nothing in the barn goes into my mouth!!!

I just installed some heat shrink tape on my D10, L1D and a couple of L0D's and it's great. It'll be tough enough to last for years and it's much nicer on the teeth.

Probably a good headlamp for this type of activity would be something like a Petzl Tikka XP or a Princeton Tec Eos.

There are also some older Petzls with a spot incandescent beam that may be more useful in perceiving depth. These also only have one setting — she doesn't need to be trying to adjust settings once she starts working!

For the ultimate in natural-looking artificial light :)thinking:), she could also look into a carbide lamp.

while i am not sure if inspecting hooves means touching the base of it, must the light be put in the mouth? how about a headlamp strapped to her palm, assuming she has 1 hand free for inspecting the base of the hoove if needed.

i agree with others here hygiene may be an issue, also, there is an odd chance an accident happening and she may crack her teeth with the light in her mouth....

would a metal or polymer clad light wrapped in (inner) bicycle tubing work the same? this would widen your choice of lights by a huge margin. maybe you could fill us in on preferance for a clickie or a twist on/off switch?...

Some of us have different ways of using our lights and since the OP asked about a light that could be held with the teeth there should be less input as to whether it's okay to use it that way and more input on lights/methods that will help them out.

I have held lights in my teeth for over 20 years and it works out well enough for me too, even though I've been told that I'll freeze my mouth at -40 below, crack my teeth or whatever.

My D10 and L0D have been great, but they just got better when I added heatshrink the other day and I think it's a very good option.

Anyway let's not derail the thread into how people should use their lights or talk about horse hooves.
Any ideas that don't involve crass comments on what my partner can put in her mouth would be appreciated?
This statement here seems to have been ignored in a couple of the replies.

Hi Skyva,

You should check out Nite Ize products. They have a few differnt solutions to your problem. The headband for example should work with your EX10. I have one of those and it works with all my 1aa and similar sized lights like my D10 or my L1D Q5. Its stretches so the ex10 should fit. They also have a stretch holster that fits just about any light, and a lite bite that fits any light close to the size of a minimag. Hope this helps. :grin2:
