I was using my Gerber sonic tonight to 'observe' some items. It's a light I've only had for a couple of months, and has been opened since then to check the battery.
The story: I heard a distinct pop! and the light went out. As I opened the tailcap to inspect, air was audibly expelled from the battery chamber. Fortunately, no caustic chemicals had leaked from the cell, although the plastic sleeve had slipped off by about 1mm. I think the pop was the plastic sleeve separating/splitting.
I installed a new cell, and the light works fine now. The old cell still was only 1/2 discharged, but I'm going to recycle it anyway.
This wasn't like the gas buildup that I have experienced with a Gerber IU. That light gets slightly pressurized over time, and the cap pops off a little when opened. This event was much more extreme.
Thanks for reading, and careful with your batteries!
