Hi all, may I know what is the disadvantage of the triple-AAA-batteries-in-a-holder that budget flashlights commonly use? Why do better lights rather go with 1 cr123 than have them?

I am by no means an expert in this, but to me the triple AAA battery holders are a place of failure in a flashlight. Dropping the light or sometimes just taking the batteries out can cause the holder to break. At that point you may not be able to get a replacement holder. Suddenly your light isn't usable.

I have a couple of cheapish lights that do use the holders, but they are beaters that I will hand off to someone to borrow rather than one of my nicer lights, just incase it never comes back.

Thanks for highlighting that thread StandardBattery. :)

Thanks Skeptic for your answer. :)

(Thought I better say thanks before this gets closed)

This is another "must read" thread regarding the use of 3xAAA lights....

Personally, my favorite penlight uses 3xAAA, so I have no complaints with them...

Here is a quote from HKJ regarding 3xAAA lights:

I have two points against 3xAAA lights:

  1. They are direct drive
  2. One AA has the energy of 2½ AAA, i.e. using AA makes the light both smaller and lighter.

Those are useful links from StandardBattery and Ryanrpm. This thread belongs in the Batteries section. I'm moving it there now.
