So i go home, see a loose AAA cell and decide to pick it up. Well, it had leaked and oozed a stain into my nicely patina'd 60 yr old desk..::sigh
HOW would it leak not plugged into anything?

I've had Duracell's leak like this before....unexplained events like this makes me wonder whether we can actually be careful of what we put into out lights.

the D cells I had on my workbench probably pissed themselves watching F cells being ripped out in front of them....I was trying to extract the carbon rods

Just my 2 cents: Use NiMH or Li batteries in all of your expensive lights that you care about, and keep a stock of fresh alkalines (I prefer energizer) for when those run dry in an emergency. This solves the problem.

This is what I do! With only 2 lights with Alkaline. 2D Mag-LED and Arc AAA-P.
