I've just bought a nice Lux V, BB500 light engine, and I have a couple of questions.
1. Can/Should I use JSB R123's with it?
2. Can/Should I use it in an Aleph 2 head?
Many thanks.

Catman10,
If you use the JSB R123's that charge up to 4.2v you can only use one. The BB will not handle two of them as it would be 8.4v too much for a BB and/or 5W.
You can use the Aleph2 head, but it will not seat well if I remeber right.
I hope I got all of that right. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

OOPS forgot that there was some problems with the BB and the Pila batteries. I don't know if this is the same with the JSB R123 4.2 cells or not. I have used them as a single cell with the BB and a 5W.YMMV

You can use 1xR123 without any worries. You may be able to use 2xR123 if the Vf of the emitter is high enough... but this is risky.
With BB500 a single R123 will provide enough juice with quite a decent runtime.

I don't think BB500 will generate a lotta heat, so I think Aleph 2 head should be no problems.

Just my 2cents...

I am not familiar enough with the rechargable/BB/Lux V issue to comment on it.

However, you *can* use a Lux V light engine in an A2 head. With a BB500, the heat build-up should not be that big of an issue. However, you may have trouble getting the LED focused correctly. The Lux V needs to be a little bit further back from the reflector than the Lux III. With A1 and A3 heads, this is easy to accomplish with the use of a spacer washer. In the A2, however, this spacer washer won't have any effect since the reflector is so narrow at the bottom. The difference is significant, but I think that the Lux V in the A2 head is still more than usable even at the slightly non-optimized focus.

You can make a spacer for the Aleph II head using a business card and paper hole punch. Just drop the hole over the dome of the luxeon. It should work OK.

Another good spacer is the black rings around the surefire and some other 123 batteries.

ya, mut is really good at tuning 5watt and reflectors.

I'd be careful with the Li-Ion since it hasn't been determined yet which is the "safe" drive level for the BadBoy of newer revisions there.

Heat ... can be a problem, the light will need to be hand-cooled when used for longer periods constant-on.

The beam will be like this in the Aleph2:
